Tempe firefighter dies when tree falls on tent while hunting

 Slideshow
FLAGSTAFF, AZ -- Neighbors are remembering a Tempe firefighter killed when a large tree snapped during Monday's big storm and crushed him as he slept in a tent.

Skylar Stock of Queen Creek was with a friend on an elk hunting trip when he was killed Monday night. Officials got the 9-1-1 call around 10:30 p.m.

"He was a great father, I didn't speak to him much but he was always looking after his kids," said neighbor Walter Eyden. "Great family man, it's tragic for his family."

Gerry Blair with the Coconino County Sheriff's Office said Stock and another hunter were asleep in their tent during the severe winter storm that brought high wind gusts.

Blair said the 27-year-old's hunting companion was unhurt when the 70-foot ponderosa pine snapped off about 20 feet above the ground and came crashing down on the pair's tent.

"He was always real good watching his kids," said neighbor Kelle Johnson. "When they would ride up and down the sidewalk he would stand there and just watch them."

The top portion of the tree fell on the tent and struck Stock on the head causing his immediate death, according to Blair.

"Just complete shock," said a neighbor who only wanted to be referred to by his first name, John.

"Sometimes the ones who get taken away are the very best ones," added John.  "(The accident) just does not seem fair."

Officials said the 70-foot tree snapped and fell on the hunters' tent (Coconino County Sheriff's Office)
The other man wasn't hurt and cut his way out of the tent, using Stock's cell phone to call 911, officials said.

The men were camping off of State Route 260 about 20 miles east of Camp Verde. Winds from the major winter storm that was lashing the area were clocked at above 60 mph when the tree snapped.

Detectives who inspected the tree at the point where it broke reported obvious evidence of severe ant infestation, Blair said.

Tempe police say Stock was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

They say he is survived by his wife, and three young children, a four-year-old boy and two daughters who are two-years-old and 8-months-old.
Statement from Skylar Stock's family

Skylar Stock
Skylar Wayne Stock, 27, of Queen Creek, died as a result of injuries sustained when a tree blown over by Monday's storm fell across the tent he was sleeping in. Skylar was a selfless individual who would help anyone in need at any time. His career choice as a Firefighter suited well this instinct of selflessness, as he was in his 2nd year with Tempe Fire Department.

Skylar made friends easily. He lived the gospel of Jesus Christ and was raising his three young children to also know and love the Lord.

The family wishes to thank all those who have expressed their condolences and would also like to express deep appreciation to the Firefighters on his crew and the others at Tempe Fire for the camaradarie and genuine support shown to them.

An account has been established at Wells Fargo Bank under the name of Stock Family Donation Fund for those wishing to contribute to the family.

Truly tragic. Just futile thinking on my part, but it always gnaws at me that something that has stood for so long has to fall during the very brief time period that someone is in the wrong place.  A grim reminder to check the trees around you - as much as possible, when putting up a tent, deer stand, etc.

Sad, We lost a freind recently while on an elk hunting trip to Colorado.  Jerry O'Braynt was and avid hunter and fisherman, he was the outdoor writer for the Abilene Reporter News, a man wwho was always willing to stop and sip a cup of coffee and talk about outdoor adventures.

I am sure Jerry died happy, he had a heart attack shortly after killing his elk.  He died doing what he liked to do in and area he loved, what more could one ask for?

My thought and prayers goes out to the family of the firefighter.

Can't be sure but the tree appears to be dead. If so why were they camped near it? Live trees seldom just snap like that.

We have had a bunch of fires here lately, and before that, the bark beetle killed a bunch of the ponderosas. The forest service tried to harvest the trees that burned, but the local greenie wackos.got a court order stopping the harvest. They were going to use them to make pulp. Northern Arizona has many pulp factories. it was so bad, until last year, the forest service posted signs day use only,no camping in the burn areas.

Ants can get into some trees and hollow out a large portion of the inside with little or no evidence on the outside.

Last year my neighbor went off on vacation I was watching his house.  We had heavy winds one night while he was gone.  one of his big white spruces (45 to 50 ft) snapped off midway, and the top half fell down just missing his house.  It was a good healthy tree, no rot or insects.

After seeing how the big tree fell at Norman's I am now paranoid myself about falling trees.  When we were hunting two weeks ago, we camped amongst some big white spruces.  That night the wind came up and I laid awake most of the night thinking about trees falling.

We have had some big forest fires last summer.  Most of the Tanana Flats burned.  As we were going in for the hunt we saw lots of dead trees standing, just black trunks, no limbs.  Due to permafrost the tree roots do not go down into the ground.  Tree roots run out along the top of the frozen dirt, under the Tundra.  During a hot fire the Tundra burns off leaving the roots exposed, with nothing to hold them in place.  least little wind and they fall by the hundreds.  It's spooky driving in under, and through those trees.  Using as chain saw to clear the trail, hoping nothing falls while you are cutting away the fallen ones.  Not daring to get off the trail to go around a fallen tree.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
