Rechambering question
« on: December 13, 2009, 04:21:22 AM »
Which Encore barrel caliber could you rechamber with the least amount of trouble to the 7x57 ?

7-30 Waters, swap the extractor out with any 30-06 family extractor, disregard the existing rim cut.  ;)

A little more info on this and also who does it for less than the cost of a new barrel?

Any competent smith can do it, the only problem I see is the 7-30 Encore barrel is a custom shop offering just as the 7x57 is, it would only be practical if you can get hold of a second hand barrel, otherwise you can just order a 7x57. Site sponsor Wayne York of Oregunsmithing does rechambers for about $100, he's done several for me, has a 243 H&R barrel right now being rechambered rebored to 260Rem. The extractor swap is an easy DIY job if you can order the part from TC.  ;)

A 7mm-08 Remington barrel would be perfect for the 7x57 Ackely Improved re-chambering.

Maybe for the AI version, but not the 7 X 57 Mauser.

Correct, but a better logical choice or 280 Remington Ackley Improved.

Disregarding the obvious question of "Why not just get a barrel already chambered for 7x57mm from the Custom Shop?", I would think a 7mm TCU would be a prime candidate for a rechamber to 7x57mm.  You'll have to change the extractor, obviously, but that shouldn't be a big deal anyway.

Yep, the 7 TCU would work but I don't see many 7 TCU Rifle barrels for the Encore....mostly Contender barrels.

Would rate of twist matter ? It did when I went from 7BR to 708 . In the long run a custom bbl. might be best if existing rate of twist is not best for bullet weight you wish to shoot .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Finding a 7mm TCU in an Encore barrel would be a custom barrel and not worth the conversion.  If it’s a Contender barrel then it wouldn't be safe to re-chamber it in the 7x57 Mauser since the operating pressure would be too high.

Obviously you could just buy one from one of the following:

If you want a stellar custom barrel then I suggest SSK Industries.
