SSI One finally came in..............

Picked up my SSI yesterday. Trigger pull was not as bad as I have heard, wood was better than expected. Overall impression was very good. One feature I like is the extractor/ejecter drops down so it doesn't scratch the case on loading, checked with Mossberg and they said it is suppossed to do this. Gun is really tight and stiff, hope that is a good omen. I installed the supplied scope base and an S1 3x9 Sightron on it. I hope to get to the range this weekend.

I just put together some loads from Nosler with 165 gr. Hornady's and IMR 4350 and it seemed to average about 1.5 to 2.0 with 4 different charge weights. I think I'll try IMR 4064 next. Overall the gun in great except the weight is a little on the heavy side for me. But it helps at the bench. Nothing wrong with the 06 but I just like the 308 better. All I'll ever shoot is Whitetails back home in Mississippi when we retire, and the 308 should be just fine. If anybody wants to trade barrels let me know.

On my second range trip I did a little better, I found out I get better groups in my SSI with 150 gr. bullets(1 to 1 1/2 groups). After this trip I got adventurous and decided to slick up the trigger. It is now a little more crisper and definitely lighter. Oh, if anyone tries to work on their trigger, throw away those little copper clips and get some regular steel ones from the parts store.

I have the Mossberg SSI in 270 cal. I ordered the gun last Christmas to replace my last rifle "ole 30-30". I had not seen the rifle till it came in to my local gunshop. I'm very satisfied with the rifle, great fit and finish, well balanced, very nice walnut stock. Trigger was light and crisp, just right. Accuracy is outstanding right out of the box, consistent 3 shot groups of 1/2 inch at 100yds with Nitrex 150gr ammo. Not bad, not bad at all for $400 including tax! I topped it with a Micro Dot 4-12x56 scope and I get the same groups on the range at night with black targets.
 Wouldnt trade my SSI for anything.

      If anyones interested I can tell you how to lap the barrel-reciever so its not so stiff to open and close. Some SSi rifles are sensitive to the screw torque on the forearm, affecting accuracy.

Have owned ssi in 22-250 for over one year. Very pleased with accuracy and overall quality. Just got new barrel in 308 and been to range once but only had time to sight in. Need to go back and find out how she groups.

 22-250 groups 1/2 to 3/4" 3 shot groups with the heavy barrel. Is a little stiff on lock up but lock up excellent with both barrels. Trigger could be lighter, is this something I could do?

 Been using Hornady factory ammo in 22-250. Might reload with 308 but so far Hornady 308 in 150 gr seems to show good potential. Do hope mossberg expands their barrel offerings. :grin:

Hey victor

            If you have ever did any work on a trigger then you probably handle this one. It's not complicated at all. Bear in mind I'm pretty sure it will void your warranty at least on the trigger section of the gun. I took mine apart and polished up the sear and trigger mating surfaces with a Wyoming stone. You will probably not get the copper clips to hold the 2 pins again like they orignally did so I would just get some c type clips from the local getting place. Go easy, don't change any angles or take too much off, as the old saying goes "you can always take more off you just can't put it back". If you decide to do it just watch the springs in there. 308 barrel is next on my list. Mine is in Dirty/06, it shoots great 1 to 1 1/2 inch at 100 yds but I have never had a great yearning for the 06, but I had a chance to buy a new in the box Mossberg SSI from a dealer  for $309.00 so I took it.

I finally had a chance to look at one in my local shop.  Seems pretty nice although a bit heavy.  Anyone know how much the extra barrels are running?  The guy at the shop had no clue and didn't feel inclined to actually look it up for me  :(

I'm looking for something in a centerfire .22 maybe .223 or .22-.250.

They make the barrels in .223 and .22-250. The 22-250 only comes in a varmint barrel, the 223 comes in both. The regular barrels range from about $200 - $250 depending on where you look. The varmint (bull) barrels will run you $250 - $300. If you search online you might find them even cheaper.

I just picked up a SSI at Galyan's in 308 for $229.  I was tempted to buy a second one in 223 instead of buying an extra barrel.   I was about ready to buy an H&R when I saw a guy at the range with a SSI.  I liked the wood and the internal hammer.  I think Mossberg has filled a gap between the H&R and Ruger #1 or TCs.  But if they are going to compete they are going to need to offer more cal.. I have always liked Mossberg shotguns being a lefty the tang saftey is great.  I carried a Mod. 500 as a duty shotgun and used it for hunting and skeet it never let me down.

Mossberg has no plans of offering other calibers at this time. They said that in the future they might offer other calibers though. It is rumored that  Virgin Valley Custom Guns www.virginvalleyguns.com will make barrels in other calibers for the SSI if enough people request it. The H&R is a very solid rifle, but not the best fit and finish. You have to send the reciever in for fitting to get a new barrel. As for the Ruger #1 and the TC, I think they are fine rifles, but I would consider the SSI as an equal to these fine guns. The SSI has excellant fit and finish, very well balanced and is more accurate out of the box than the average rifle. I have talked to several gunsmiths who have had to tweak the #1's to get the accuracy my SSI .270 had right out of the box. Of course, the TC is known for its accuracy.

 P.S. Has anyone else with a single shot heard these questions regarding you're rifle;
   What do you do if you miss and need a second shot?
   What are you going to do if you wound a deer and it starts running?
   Why would you want a single shot?

I had one in .223 with .243 & 30-06 barrels.  I made a spacer washer thick enough to keep the wood off the barrel when the allen head bolt on the fore end was tightened.  The spacer went on the allen bolt between the forearm and the barrel.   All 3 would shoot under an inch at 100 yards.  Mine had beautiful wood.  My nephew has it now.

I got rid of the spring device that sets the safety automatically after each shot in the process of working the trigger.   The 30-06 barrel did not extract properly.   

Darn nice gun but a bit difficult to use on bags because of the  break-open action.  Like my #1 better for that reason.

For your info. I have a 30-06 listed on firearms for sale very nice with pictures I also have a 223 that I am keeping would like a 243 barrel but have never found one. I realy love mine and they are well made too bad never seem to go over, anyone know if they have quit making them?

DeaconLLB, I bought a SSI in .308 from a Gander Mtn store in Houston well over 2 years ago that was on clearance for about $230.  When speaking with a Gander Mtn clerk in the gun department that was a long time Gander employee that had moved to Houston from Minn., when they first opened up stores in Houston area, the employee recounted to me a story concerning Mossberg and the SSI.

The clerk said the SSI had been a fairly good selling rifle for the Gander store back in Minn. and about 2 years after the SSI had been introduced he had a customer who needed a part for one.  The clerk ended up calling Mossberg and spoke with someone, trying to find the part.  This person at Mossberg informed him that Mossberg no longer produced the rifle and no parts for it were available.  During this conversation the Gander clerk was told Mossberg had sold all the tooling to make the rifle and all remaining SSI parts to another company.  When the Gander clerk pressed the Mossberg person for name of company who bought everything, he was told that information was confidential and the Mossberg people were told giving out any information on the buyer was grounds for being fired.
