« on: December 12, 2009, 01:31:24 AM »
well good deal so far.. i havn t lived in this house but 2 yrs an not through any 10 12 degree ice storm.. they were nt calling for the cold an ice, at the same time.. but if they missed a bit and we have an ice storm coming,,it could kill the power, for no telling how long..id kinda let it slip up on me..they so many dead li9mbs an trees out around here, powers definitly going if the weatherman is wrong..sooo i had to dig out the kerosene ive got left ,,run some water ,an check the flashlights an such..im always ready by this time of year ,but been preoccupied.. of course the generators ready but shes just a 2500 ..
kinda wondered what some of yall have to do.. i know many are in your own house an built it so the biggest problem is making sure your generators ready..probably just testing the system for most of you.
this is my system and hav n t tested it here this house..i felt dang stupid when i checked the weather an saw the possibilities..my middle name is ,,prepared .. for the worst that is....i slept it this time though.. wonder if im gettin old an forgetful??nah  ;D
i put two question marks.. as im known for cammas an periods only.. most time in the wrong place..im rite proud o myself fer that :).. god bless you fellas..slim
the wife nearly burnt us out last night as in a effort to let her do something ..i ask her to heat some of our apple streudal in the micro wave..she set it for no telling how long..it still had 3 minutes left on it when i caught it an got it outa there.. burnt to a crisp,an the card board was ready to catch fire,, kitchen full o smoke..no telling how long it was set for..
of course i got credit for it,, an of course agreed i had done it.... i was laughing inside the whole time..you got to see the humor in this..since i caught it anyway.. ..whew lesson learned.shes sweetest woman i ever came accross..
she said she gonna do the micro waving herself from now on if i couldn t even run a micro wave.lmao..inside of course..

Slim we seem to get more ice every year.We used to get more snow.Power going out is a given any more.WE live in the country and are on a well.Usually have a few gallons of water stored and have plenty of candles and wood stacked for the fireplace. The last big storm took out all the weak trees around the house and along the power lines.Don't have to worry about that too much.We lost power the other morning from a car hitting a pole over five miles away. Can't do much about that.I have a small generator, but very seldom use it.Had too last summer when the power was out.Basement was flooding due to very high ground water.Used it to run two sump pumps to keep the water out of the heat pump and hot water heater.Slow

Slim rem 7,

We got moved into this new to us place last Aug and it did not take me too long to get a couple of the ventless gas wall heaters installed. Have a third one (new in box) for about a week now but did not do anything with it yet due to the deer season. These heaters work very well and do not require any power.

I do have a generator also (5,500 watt) that will easily meet our needs here. Had to go out back in a small cul-de-sac where the central air conditioning unit lives and install a sub-box to that unit that contains a 220 volt receptical so that I can back feed the house if necessary. We only run the generator of evenings during an outage with the main goal being to keep the refrig & freezer charged up and conserve on that gasoline.

I know of at least four locals here who have gone a step farther.
The generator has a sensor for the main power line and will do a switch gear change automatically if the power stays off say for one min.
When the power comes back on, the sensor will see this and again do an auto change over with the generator shutting it'self down.
The generator starts it'self automatically (say once a week) and run for a bit as an exercise to enhance reliability.
The generator runs on Nat Gas\Propane which is a big plus since this sorce is already at the residence.

Got two Generators in the garage.  Either one will run the boiler.  That is the important draw.  If power is going to be out for more than 12 hours I can hook the bigger one to the well.

We've got oil lamps sitting all over the house.  The wife thinks they are pretty.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

over the years ice has shut down our electric several time here in sw missouri. twice longer than a week at a time with numerous shorter outages.i use a honda 5500 gas generator, works very well but uses a gallon per hr of fuel. i usually only run it about 2 or 3 hrs in the evening to run the freezers and fridge and take a shower. i recently traded for a nice diesel generator but havent got to try it out dureing a outage yet. im hopeing it will use about 2 qts a hr of diesel.heat comes from the wood stove, light from the coleman or kerosene lantern.cooking on propane grill on the covered back porch or wood fired bbq in the backyard.only thing i lack is hot water, but that i can heat on the wood stove in a washtub.although if yu crank the woodstove in the house yu can tolerate a cold shower.i got rid of all my propane stuff in the house cuz just got sick to death of them jacking the price up to 2 buks a gallon every time yu had a cold snap or they just felt like it.i  kinda enjoy a good outage in the winter, kinda like camping out but at home. nows the time boys to fill up your gas and diesel cans and dump some stabilizer or treatment in them and test out the generators and make sure they still run good.
