I can't stand Thieves
« on: December 18, 2009, 11:54:29 AM »
I just wanted to vent a little. An old friend called today to tell me that someone broke into his house and stole a .45 that I sold him a few years ago. It makes me sick and angry to very unkind degree for various reasons. One of which is that he lives just 2 blocks away from me in a neighborhood that doesn't see much of this. It's his only gun so he has no safe or alarm system. I have safes and alarms but I'm still uneasy when away from home for multiple days. I'm sure others have had guns stolen. Anyone care to share.

Sorry to hear that. Tell your friend to be pro active and notify area gun shops with the gun & serial #, (gun shops can't run a stolen check,) and stop by Pawn shops and look for it himself.

Thats what I had to do and it paid off... not even 20 minutes after i called a place with the SN looking for it, the guy (who I know) took it in and sold it there...

Sadly it can often be someone that you know, or know of who is the culprit. I will let trusted friends in the house and we may even visit the reloading room & the safe's but this never happens if that friend has an aquaintence or friend with them.

Once left a shotgun on top of a dog box while quail hunting.  Drove off and when we made a left turn the gun slid off in the highway.  At the next stop I missed it.  Looked everywhere but could not find it.  The next weekend I saw someone at a house where the gun had fallen in the highway.  They told me who picked it up, and that it was a very evil person and I'd never see that shotgun again.

I called the person and told him that he was seen retrieving my shotgun.  He admitted it but said he gave it to someone who said they lost it.  He did not know their name.  I told him to expect a visit from the sheriff.  About an hour later the man called me back and said the gun was at a local dealer's store.  The forearm was broken.

A week earlier I had gone to this dealer and given him the serial number of the shotgun and asked him to watch for it.  When calling for the shotgun, I reminded the dealer of my report the day I lost the gun.  He opened his register and retrieved a stub with the serial number that he had recorded the day I reported my loss.  It matched.

End of story.  I got the gun and had to order a new fore stock piece.  Was never certain upon whose side the dealer was on - his neighbor who found my gun, or me - the rightful owner.

I have had 4 guns stolen over the years. I never got them back but made sure to file a police report with the serial numbers. You never know if they are going to be used in a crime.

Sometimes there is justice. Sometime back in Wichita a couple of guys brought items into a pawn shop. Turned out the items belonged to the clerk who delayed them long enough for the police to get there. They had stolen the stuff form the clerk's house just hours earlier after the clerk had left for work.
