I have a .22-6mm-22 TTH, which is very close to the .22-06. If you build one I would recomand at least a 1 in 8 twist. I have shot 2 in. 3 shot groups with mine at 600 yrds. The bullet of choice for me is the 80 gr. Sierra match. The 80gr. Bergers are also a real good choice. I have a new barrel on order for mine now, I shot the barrel out in abt. 1,00 rounds so they are barrel burners. If you build one don`t fire to many rounds without letting the barrel cool. I would also recomand you put it on a Savage action so that you can switch the barrels yourself. With the .22-06 you should be able to get 3,500 to 3,600 fps. with the 80 gr. bullets and alot of slow burning powder.

Please do not interpret this negatively because I am almost laughing out loud.  I had similar desires in my 30's and 40's.  Nothing but velocity appealed to me.

Now that I am in my 60's, I want lighter weight rifles, shorter barrels, and lower recoil.  Velocity is not very important any more, but boy was it ever in my youthful years.  If 3500 fps was great, wouldn't 4000+ be ever better.

Just wondering if the generation behind me is similar to mine.  Are you younger?  Does a rifle with less than 3000 fps seem boring to you?  Do you spend hours reading ballistic charts, and dreaming of the next high velocity cartridge?  If so, you are perfectly normal.  Been their, done that.  Dozens of us here were once in your boat.

Isn't the 220 swift really close to a 22/6mm?

Charles, you must have gotten old at a very young age.  ;D I drawing rocking chair money and still palying with the Hot Rods. Not for max. velocities with lite bullets, but to push highBC bulletts faster for long range. Pastorp, what is close??? According to my Sierra manual the max. velcity with a 69 gr. bullet is 3250 fps. In the .22-6mm I have run 80 gr. bullets up to 3,550 fps, and 75 gr. bullets up to 3,650 fps. Did my hunting with velocities from 3,150 to 3,250 as that was where I got my best accuracy

I guess my coment was directed at, I thought they shared the same parent case. So how much differense could there be in velocity with any given bullet weight.

Of course you need the proper twist for the bullet weight you want to shoot, if you want acuracy.

With the barrel that is on the gun now I was able to push 80 gr. bullets up to 3,450 to 3,500 fps. without presure signs, but got my best accuracy around 3,250. It had a 1 in 8 twist. According to my Sierra manual 3,250 is the max. velocity you can get with a 69 gr. bullet in the Swift.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but how much would a guy gain with a .22-06 over a .22-08?
