Howa 22-250

I went thru all the post not one on the 22-250? any one have one? I bought it or should say I traded for it. It seems to be well constructed. First outing to the rannge first shell wouldn't eject. Didn't have a cleaning rod with me. After getting home I used the rod to remove the spent casing. At 73 I should have known better not to trust others reloads. I was givin a box of reloads. I suspect the loads were on the high side, when I got home I pulled a bullet and the case in it was a compressed load.I tried several powders and found none had a compressed load. Went to the range again and not a problem with my loads worked up to Max no signs of pressure. I have learned the loads were several grains over max. So I again learned another lesson at my age don't trust any loads that are not your own. But one thing I have found out the Howa came thru this just fine shooting 1-1/2" extreme spread with factory. So the howa must be a very strong action etc. to handle the extreme high pressure that it endured. So all is well but with a cheap rifle the end reult may have been tragic. Let this be a lesson to all if you are given some loads to check them first. I got them from a friend and I know the guy he is very maticulus in everything he does, but I later found out he got them with a rifle he bought at a gun show. I don't own a 22-250 but I own a 223, 25-06, and 270, all Howa's. I also have a 6.5x55 on the way (another Howa). I've been trying to find this one for over a year. I think the Howa is a fine rifle for the money. Yes, it is foreign made but there are very few things that aren't these days. Mine are all very accurate and seem to be well made. You've learned a very important lesson about reloads. I reload and have some friends that reload but I'll roll my own, thank you.

A rifle that will handle that kind of pressure will handle anyting with normal loads. That proves one thing the rifles are very well constructed. There are numerous high dollar guns produced in Japan, Browning, Weatherby. Most made at the Miruruku factory. I shot the rifle yesterday it shot VG for Factory will try reloads as soon as I fire all the factory (100) Lou

I was looking at a stainless rifle in .22-250 but I couldn't find any posts about that caliber either.  It has the plastic stock and I am not thrilled about that.

It is still floating around in the back of my mind to go buy it but just haven't done it yet.

Too whom ,what ever you do with cows LOL. Well back to the sensable side. This is my first Howa, and I can only say it is a winner. It's very well made one has to but hold one and you can see what I mean. After the stupid thing I did all went well Thank God, as it could have been a serious accident. I have been told any good rifle maker will test thier rifle well beyond the limits to make sure thier rifles are safe.  Somemoretesting various loads then to declare war on Ground Hogs. Lou

I just picked one up today, couldn't pass it up.  It's a stainless 22-250 with the green hogue stock and 22 inch barrel.  It was on the shelf for $369.99 and I got it for $330.00, must have been in the warehouse or one of the other stores as I'm in this one several times a week and hadn't seen it.  It is new in box and the trigger had no creep in it, have it adjusted down to 1.5 lb and it holds just fine, couldn't get it to drop by bouncing it off the floor, slamming the bolt forward or flipping the safety off.  This is gonna be a coyote gun and I'm used to set triggers set at less than this weight.  Can't wait to get a scope on it and check it out.  DP

Congrats on the rifle! I'm really looking forward to your range report once you get to reloading for it.
After discussing the 220 Swift on another forum, I've come to the conclusion I'd be better off with a .22-250 and the Howa is one of my options. I've got my eye on the 20" heavy varmint barrel in .22-250. It's got quite a bit of weight to it, but for a varmint gun it should be fine. I already have a walkin' around varmint rifle in .223. I'm not crazy about the feel of the Hogue stocks grip angle for a hunting rifle, but I think it would be fine for varmint shooting.
