Electronic book tablet?

I was at, I think, Barnes and Noble the other day and they had their electronic book device that's about the size of a book but displays one page at a time electronically in black and white. Great concept, but I didn't care for this implementation of it. The display was too small and scrolling was too slow. I don't remember the name of the gizmo. I assume they'll get better. Maybe there are better ones now. I don't think this was the Amazon Kindle device.

What do you think of these things?

I'd like to see magazine subscriptions in a format like that.

The device I've got is called a Kindle.  I won one in a raffle at the christmas party this year and have had it a couple of weeks now.  Seems the price on these devices are better than $250.

I've downloaded several free books from the Gutenberg project and have been reading Company Aytch by Sam Watkins on it.

I didn't think I'd like it, but the more I use it the more I like it.  That said, the jury is still out.

My first impression was it's a device used by Amazon to sell more books but it has wireless access to the internet too.

Honestly, at this point, if it hadn't been given to me, I wouldn't buy one.

I went almost completely electronic with my library when I was moving overseas a decade ago because I just simply couldn't bring the books with me. Since I've been back I've gone almost completely back to paper. Didn't enjoy reading on the laptop screen. Have an ereader on my iPhone, and its a pain to read. I've played with the Kindle, and Google's version of it ... still prefer paper.

I like paper too, and it's not because I'm some kind of Luddite. I just like to be able to pick it up and put it down and dog ear some pages and put some bookmarks in it and write on the pages. The book as a medium is just so appealing for most reading.

A lot of reading for reference material is better electronically, and I prefer PDF for many things. But for reading for study and comprehension, I just prefer the book form.

i think the digitized books are great when your talking old and hard to find even rare books that would cost a fortune to buy. one of the greatest projects now becoming a realty http://codexsinaiticus.org/en/ should be of great interest for those that take interest in the Bible and its morphing into its present form.

However, there is just something about holding a book in your hand while you read.

Decided to download Microsoft Reader for free and use the laptop she already has.
