Springfield interchangable barrells?
« on: December 09, 2009, 01:28:41 PM »
Hello All:

Have a Springfield GI .45 and was wondering with availablity of ammo - is it possible to get a 38 / 357 barrell to place in the .45 GI? so in essence have "2 guns" with the one frame?

Thanks.

Hi Msgfox,

There are several calibers that you can put into the 1911 frame.

45 acp,
9 mm,
38 Super ( Almost 357 mag specs)
40 s&w,
Just about anything that fits into the 1911 magazine without binding.

I have been thinking of a 7.62x25 but I will not be able to use factory ammo as it is too long.  Handloads only

The big issue will be the slide and ejector,  You will need to get a complete top end unit for each case head size and the appropriate ejector.  I think that the 38 super is the one you want and is easily done.  Just remember that the the point of aim will change if you keep the same slide and just change the barrel.

Also don't forget the magazines will be different for each caliber as well.

You will need a complete upper and appropriate magazines to convert to .38 Super, 9mm, 9x23, or .40. The cost will exceed the price of a new GI Springer. Now you could pick up a .22 conversion and a couple magazines for $300 or so.

There are two cartridges that will interchange barrels in the 1911 45.  One is the 400 CorBon, which is a pos, and there is also a 45 acp case necked to 9mm/38 that is a faster/hotter version of the old 38/45.  However, the point of impact will change and adjustable sights will be required to bring it to bear. HTH.

I like dedicated guns---and, I know this is not the sig forum.
However; the new Sigs MIGHT be a gun you want to look at. The framses remain the same and they offer interchangable uppers.
The Sig 239 and a couple pf other models offer a change of barrels from .40 to .357Sig.
You might just want too get another Colt or Springfiled in .38 Super--which is 9mm/38, the same bullet--or a 9mm. I like this choice much better.
