Turkey Opener Tomorrow in Alabama
« on: March 14, 2010, 02:20:15 PM »
I am headed out to my grandfather's and we are going to try to close the deal on a couple of the three gobblers we have been seeing together pretty well every morning. They have been silent the last few mornings, but the wind has been terrible so maybe it will lay tonight. I will give an update tomorrow.

Well here is my story and I am sticking to it!

We went in the woods about 30 minutes before daylight to a spot my Papa swears he roosted a gobbler. At about 6:30 it breaks daylight and he hasn't said a word so I yelp and nothing! After about 10 minutes I owled and the only turkey that answered was about a mile away so we load up head to him. Get to where he is and yelp and nothing so we just sit down on a sand ridge and wait. After about 30 minutes and a few cackles and clucks later, six hens and the ol' boy step over the ridge. He is only 50 yards now and I click my safety off ready to knock his lights out. Well at 47 yards he stops to strut and there he struts with the hens walking in circles around him for about an hour and a half. In that time I never had a shot where I wouldn't have killed a hen too. Finally I cackle to get the hens fired up and he answers me (he's only gobbled twice all morning now and it is 9:30). Well I just know he is coming in then and push the safety back off, but he goes right back to strutting. Finally about 10:30 he just turns around and struts off the way he came.

I was so stiff by this point that I didn't care if I ever saw him again much less killed him. It was an exciting hunt though. I started to invite my oldest little sister, but I am glad I didn't cause it may have turned her against turkey hunting having to watch one that long not get to shoot him.
