Moose River Plains anyone?
« on: September 28, 2009, 03:26:05 PM »
My brother and I are going to make a trip during the opening weekend of the Northern NY deer and bear season. He's traveling from Rochester and me from the boston area.  We won't have any chance to scout and the only area I'm remotely familair with is the Moose River plains near the Limekiln entrance .  Can anyone give us some advice as to where to start our wandering?  We'll likely be tenting near our vehicles and venturing out from there or driving a short distance from camp and walking.  I could bring a canoe if someone has recommendations that will increase our likelyhood of seeing bear or bucks.  Thanks in advance for your help.  if we get lucky i promise to share the story

Talk to the ranger at the entrance gate. They most always have bears raiding campsites during the summer and he will be happy to tell you which areas they are in. This will give you some idea as to where they are hanging out. And don't forget to cook bacon for breakfast, bears love bacon and will travel a goodly distance to get some.  Good luck and good hunting.

Thanks FLNT4EVER,
Have you ever hunted there.  I've been there in the heart of summer when things were thick with vegetation but not hunters or campers.  I've read in other forums that we should expect a lot of other hunters?  It seems like a big area, how many people are we talking about? Sometimes if I find a nice place to sit I don't mind other folks getting the game up and moving but I'd rather not be in a war zone.  The idea was to kinda disappear in the woods, avoid people and maybe kill a bear.  Both of us hunt farms and public land near home that give us plenty of opportunity to see other hunters

I haven't hunted the plains area in many years . It was quite popular with bear hunters in years past, but now adays I don't think to many people hunt bear. Let your fingers do the walking and call the Limeklin entrance.I.m sure they can give you the information you want .It would be much more accurate and current than anything I could tell you. Good luck and good hunting.

We had to move our trip back two weeks, from oct. 24 to nov 7. Will the bears still be moving?  I know so much depends on the weather between now and then but care to venture a guess?

The bears are still moving up here (Coldwater, Ontario, couple hours north of Toronto). I'm guessing if they are still out and about here they will be pretty much anywhere in NY state as well, but thats only a guess.

Check page 60 of the Hunting Guide, the DEC recommends hunting on state land near several state campgrounds in Hamilton Co.  because they want to get rid of the bears that raid the garbage.
