Broken firing pin! Springfield Arms .410 SxS
« on: December 18, 2009, 03:21:48 PM »
Got an old side by side 410 in today that only shoots from the lh barrel, on further inspection the firing pin is missing the whole tip.  I can't find anything about it or any possibility of parts, but that dosen't really matter as i would rather fix this one.  How do i go about it though?  was thinking use hardened drill rod, drill (w/ lathe) .5" into remainder of pin, silver solder, cut flat to breech and set protrusion.  I'd love to post pics if anyone can tell me how...

If I wasn't installing a new FP, that's what I'd do.

The new/replacement FP tip should be rounded, and not flat.

Protrusion should match the existing/remaining/survivor pin's.

BTW -Have you tried Numrich Arms for a FP ? - They're listed under Savage/Stevens/Springfield parts @ $11.55.

Thanks Rangr,
I've checked out Gun Parts Corp and others, the shotgun is apparently quite rare (good or bad?).  I have a few Numrich catalogs and they don't show anything like it, though a few quite similar.  The top snap (action release) has a screw through the top of it, not hidden underneath as with most other designs and the firing pins are large, 2.5" long.  I'll start re-tipping it on monday unless i hear of something better. Will post pics of the results!!

I've retipped more than a few firing pins over the years. I've found the best steel for the tip is from a universal joint cap roller bearing. I've don't know the type steel but it's tough as nails but hard enough to resist mushroming. A garage will likely be able to help out with parts acquisition. The larger truck caps provide the material needed for shotgun pins, while regular automotive ujoints will work for rifle pins. Brownells sells a steel that can be used for the purpose without heat treating but I guess I'm just cheap.. These needle bearings also make really tough spanner wrenches for things like wouble barrel shotgun standing breech firing pin bushings.  Good luck..
