Is this a good deal / way to go??
« on: December 13, 2009, 09:33:11 AM »
I'm in the market for a new muzzleloader and a friend just bought one last week and claims it was a good deal. It's a Thompson/Contender 50 Caliber Omega. It's got a camo. stock and a stainless barrel. He paid $275. It is new, never fired. Good deal or not,, how are these guns,, good or not? Thanks.   RRM

The Omega is one of the most popular, and well-like inlines ever made. Most everybody with an Omega is happy. I haven't checked prices lately but that sounds like a good price.
Aim small don't miss.

Good Deal!  If you're gonna shoot sabots, don't EVER put Bore Butter in it.  Mine shot awesome once I burned out the BB (20 to 30 shots).

This is the 1st I've heard anything negative about bore butter. Could you elaborate please as I'm just starting to use it? What do you use in place if anything? Thanks

Bore Butter is a hold over from the old days of patched round ball and lead bullets with lube grooves. The new sabot/bullet combinations are to be shot down a clean bore so there is no reason to use the BB. Some like it for barrel protection after shooting and cleaning. If the bore is completely dry and clean it will work OK. If there is any moisture left in the bore the Bore Butter will trap it and cause the bore to rust. Personally I use standard petroleum bore protectant after the rifle is clean. I have also used Ballistol which is compatable with black powder and the substitutes which some think the petroleum products are not. like Ballistol but the odor is not one I care much for. Bore Butter is basically a form of vegetable oil made into grease. The standard petroleum products work fine and only require a swab with an alcohol patch or two and a dry patch to remove it before loading.

I was using it as a bore protectant (and seasoner) in my stainless Omega.  Would wipe the bore dry (I thought) before the next session, then for the first 10-30 shots after, saboted bullets would fly every where.  Then it would straighten out and shoot perfect.  Quit using bore butter and the problem went away.  T/C rep told me what Keith said about trapping moisture, too.  Shoot sabots from a dry bore.  Just cause you think you got all the BB out don't mean you did.  Stuff works great as a conical bullet lube, but make sure you get it ALL out when cleaning.  It mixes with the powder residue and gets pretty thick and can cause rusting later when you thought it was clean.  Comes out pretty easy with a warm barrel.  JMHO.

What others said is correct. I saw many people not being able to sight in their rifles because of bore butter. I mean, 12 inch patterns on targets.
I shoot with clean dry bore. I wash with hot water and detergent. I dry, i apply Remington RemOil for storage. Before shooting, i run several dry patches (tight fitting). I have tried this 25 times this year. The first 2 shots are always in the 1" bullseye and touching.
In September there was a guy at the range who applied bore butter between shots in a Knight Long Range Hunter rifle (nice gun, stainless, laminate, etc) because that is what he used to do with his Lyman Great Plains round ball rifle. He never hit the 15" target.

Hey, thanks for the explainations about bore butter. It all makes sence and I kind of suspected some of that. It never made  sence to lube a barrel to shoot a plastic sabot down the bore   ;D

really appreciate the replies guys

I bet you could have got a good deal on that one that day.  I'd have made him an offer   :'(

Rat, I got $350 for mine with about 200 rounds thru it 3 years ago and pretty much paid for the X-7.  Wish I would have kept that one!
