Spanish mortars etc.-lots of photos of old engravings
« on: December 19, 2009, 07:01:20 AM »
A member asked about drawings of Spanish mortars so I pulled out this stuff.  General de Morla is like the godfather of "modern" Spanish artillery.  His 6? -volume work called "Tratado de Artilleria...." was published one volume at a time from 1803 to 1816.

Here's a slideshow of about 1/3 of the 119 plates in Tomo IV, one plate of mortars, and the links to the selected plates.

The drawing in the upper right of image 2691, shown here, is a 10-inch mortar like the one I restored a couple of years ago.  Since Spanish "pulgadas" are a bit different from our inches, the mortar's bore is actually pretty close to 9.5 English inches.  I'd guess the "12 inch" mortar in the upper left, has exactly the same proportions, just scaled up a bit.  The proper bed for this late 18th C. mortar is the cast-bronze bed shown in another plate.

There is some great information here! Thanks,

I find it interesting that they cast their shells with a flat in the chamber, it would increase the weight at the bottom of the shell

possibly to insure the fuse was in an upright position,  I doubt it did much for the fracture pattern when it burst.

I believe that is an inspection tool used to look for flaws in core cast bores,

The one with the cannon ball is to insure the muzzle/bore diameter is correct for that size shot.

dont you think that its more like a measuring device to check the deep of detected flaws as one of the 4 points is adjustable from the outside of the muzzle ??

You are probably correct Dan.  The acceptance criteria for a tube probably included something like "if a recess is found in the bore, the depth of it cannot exceed 0.20 inch" or something like that.  This tool then would have had a graduated scale along the shaft near the handle, so the reading was taken when the sleeve was at the furthest point it would go along shaft, indicatiing the connected feeler point was at bottom of hole.

A bore gage. I should have got that sooner. We still use them today. Thanks for the help.
