will pellets work in Huntsman .50 with 209 and 5/8 breechplug?
« on: December 17, 2009, 03:57:35 AM »
Curious question came up about using pellets in 2004 26 inch Huntsman .50 with 209 and 5/8 breechplug vs. compacted loose powder.  Setting all range time and accurizing for 1 inch placement aside, were pellets or sticks meant to be used in the Huntsman?

I'm using (2) 50 gr shockeys gold sticks.  Occassional hangfire is dirty breechplug after about 5 shots or so.  Sticks seem to work fine.

Some discussion on the forum notes that 777 or Pyrodex do or do not have some standard powder affixed to ends of pellets to faciliate ignition.

Can some one address:
1)  the use of pellets or not using pellets for Huntsman  AND

2) which pellets may or may not work best?
Thanks.

Not sure your combinations will work well if you are still using the stock breechplug with the carriers.

It doesn't seem to work too well for me with the stock plug. What other breech plug option is there? I might consider loose powder for next season.

i dont have a huntsman, but i do have the sidekick with the 5/8 breech plug w/orange primer holders and winchester 777 primers, 250 gr hornady sst low drag and i shoot 3 50gr pyrodex pellets and i've never had a problem with hangfires,  the pyro pellets do have the substance on the end to facilitate ignition. give the pyrodex a try, always worked good for me

the substance on the end is real black powder to get them to ignite.  That always made me nervous that the wonderfull pellets need an ingiter. I guess I just dont see the need for them when loose powder is cheaper and you can really work up a load that is the majority of the time more accurate. Out of my speed loader, I can load as fast with loose powder as anyone can with pellets.  iIt isnt the powder in any form that takes the time in loading.  it is the projectile.
