Finally found some cast bullets to shoot

I have tried .430" Mt Baldy and some commercial cast and the all lead like crazy animals with 2400 and Unique and Bullseye.  The commercial cast actually did ok with Bullseye.  Anyway I got a message from a guy that is a cast maker, www.bayoubullets.com .  He has some sort of coating he bakes on and he sent me some 245gr SWC bullets.  I was skeptical about how they would shoot and figured they would lead as well.  I shot 21 of the 30 bullets he sent me and there is not a trace of leading and accuracy was really good.  I was shooting 10grs of Unique.  The Mt Baldy's would lead after 1 round, the others I could get 4-5 before it was leaded up.  I have ordered more and I think I am going to run 9.5 - 10grs of Unique in my .44 for a hunting load, that should be good for deer??

It sounds to me that you have some other issues going on if you get leading with 10 gr of Unique in a 44 mag.  It could be that your bore is not smooth or the lube on the bullets you tried was failing.  Most likely though is that the bullets are too small in diameter for your gun.  I generally size my cast bullets to .432" and have not gotten any leading in my Ruger Vaquero or my lever action Winchester.  If you are shooting cast that is sized to .429" it may be too small for your gun.  The coating you mention will help but see if you can get fatter bullets.

I agree that it is probably a sizing problem. I have no problem with Mt. Baldy bullets in my .41 mag, .44 mag or .45 Colt.

I don't know, all I know is I was fed up with it.  All the cast I shot was .430" and they would just push through the cylinders with a little pressure, according to what I measured my barrel was .429".  These seem to be working so I am going to go with them.

If they work for you and the price is right,y all means stick with it.  But if the price is high, you may be better off in the long run taking time to try the larger bullets in the other makers.  Your gun, your money, your call. 8)

make and model? theres no way a gun should be leading at those levels.

Gun is 629-5 Mountain Gun.  The bullets are around $95 per 1000.

A .430" Hornady XTP will pass through the throats with just a small amount of push, I mic'd 10 of the Mount Baldy Bullets and they all measured .432", that would be some of the problem, yes?

I've used some LeadHeads out of KS in my 44 mag and 357 Max. I don't know the MV, no chrono, but I know I'm giving them a good push. Zero leading. BTW, they were GasCheck.
