Turkey fan mount question
« on: April 09, 2009, 06:12:59 AM »
I'm going out of state for a week to go turkey hunting.

In the event I kill a decent bird and would like to do a fan mount, what's the best way to go about this as far as getting the bird home???

Is it ok just to fold up the tail feathers until I get home, then lay them/borox them?

Should I keep them dry but in the ice/cooler?

Should I wrap it up in a towell, get some dry ice and freeze it. Then defrost it when I get home?

I've done this before with a turkey but that was a same day event
Thanks

If you flesh it out real good it won't make much difference I don't think.  I've never waited a week but I've waited a few days before without problem.  The only real problem is that it will start to stink if you don't carefully remove all the muscle around the tail bone.

I wouldn't freeze it... If you're that worried just take a small baggie of borax and a board with you... It doesn't take much of either...

You should freeze it.Thaw it out when you get home then flesh it, wash it in dawn dishwashing liquid three times , rinse it good every time, dry it with a blow dryer, spread it out on a board or piece of cardboard using pins to hold it in place then apply a liberal amount of borax on the part you fleshed.Let it dry for two to three weeks.

I totally agree with catkiller. I am retired now, but had a taxidermy business for over 24 years.
