Rmington 45-70, 405 gr
« on: December 17, 2009, 03:25:09 PM »
Hello all.
Are the factory Remington rounds double crimped? It looks like they're crimped at the edge of the case then again at the bottom of the bullet. I bought some Remington brass and 405's for reloading. I noticed that their brass doesn't have this extra crimp. Is there a special die to do this? Is it required to have this second crimp?

Thanks,

HA

I reload`em with just a slight crimp at the edge of the case! I shoot mine in a NEF!

i do mine the same way, just a slight crimp at the case mouth. the rem 405s and a starting load of imr4198 makes for a very accurate round out of my nef.

I have some old military cartridges that have the double crimp.  They would have to use a collet die to do that.  I know of no one who makes one.  Look like your stuck with standard taper or roll crimping, unless you contact a custom die make and have a collet die made.

The crimp at the base of the bullet is not required. I load the 45-70 for my Ruger No. 1 and I have never crimped bullets at the case mouth either. Bullet crimping is a whole subject and the necessity or desirability varies with cartridges, bullet friction and the type of firearm they will be fired in.

I don't believe the second crimp is needed, but the crimp at the mouth is needed if you plan on shooting it in anything other than a single shot, or if you feed one at a time in a lever action.

If you load up a bunch in the 1895 magazine, as I do, the crimp on the mouth will keep bullets from getting seated further into the cases, in the magazine, resulting from recoil.

I just use the Leed Factory crimp die for mine.

I was just curious as I didn't see anything on their (Remington) bulk brass. I have a Lee Factory Crimper and will be using it for my 1895CB.

Thanks all.
