Dirt holes, turkey?
« on: October 16, 2003, 08:59:45 AM »
:D I was out this morning hunting turkey. I heard one fly down and later I got one to answer the call but they didn't come any closer. I left about 9:30 with a tired butt. I saw some scraped dirt areas on the edge of the woods. There were about 5 or 6 in a small area . They were about 18 inches across. Are these turkey sign? Could they be some kinda dusting area? When would turkeys use these during the day? :bird:

Scratchings are generally kind of V shaped and you can usually make out the turkeys claw marks in these. I not sure about dusting areas.

On leaf covered ground you can generally determine when a flock has been digging based on how "moist" or fresh it looks. If it's dry then it's probably been many hours since the turkeys have turned it over. If the claw impressions are indistinct it's been a couple of days at least.

:D I guess it doesn't matter now.I called in 2 turkeys this morning but they hung up about 60yds away. Did we ever have a chit chat. They left and I stayed another hour. When I  was waking back to my car a turkey was runing down the row in front of me. Any turkey is legal in fall here in Wisconsin so  I shot it when it stopped and waited for me. I guess it was waiting for the turkey that flushed right next to me. It's over now till spring.
I guess I can go after the buck I saw yesterday. He walked by 20 feet away. I saw scrapes along the corn field.
I shot a hen but fall hunting is hard. The success rate is only 11%. I know there are plenty of turkys around but it's hard to get close to them.
