Experts criticize DNR's CWD strategy

MADISON (AP) - A panel of experts say the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources needs to be much more aggressive in tackling chronic wasting disease in deer.

The DNR submitted a proposal this summer for a five-year CWD management plan to the Natural Resources Board.

The board tabled the plan pending a review by a board-appointed panel of six outside experts from the U.S. and Canada. Their report was submitted this month.

Dale Garner is the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the panel's chairman. He tells the Wisconsin State Journal the DNR needs to look at sharpshooting and shooting deer from helicopters.

The state DNR's Tom Hauge says the department will respond after a Jan. 6 meeting.

Hunters and lawmakers last week told the agency its overzealous strategies have led to so many dead deer that they have put Wisconsin's $1 billion-a-year deer hunting heritage in jeopardy.
