Dictator Sled Long Gun?
« on: December 26, 2009, 01:52:56 PM »
What is it? Click on pics for full size.
Hint 1: Cannonmn has probably tripped over it if he wasn't watching where he was walking.
Hint 2: I embedded all the details in the jpeg.  It's in the IPTC info if you know how to extract it.

Looks like the 12" Stockton Navy Gun to me made by the Mersey Foundry in England.  Mike and I saw one just like that at the Washington Navy yard in 2002 and it was mounted on the 13" Seacoast Mortar Bed, modified like the one in your pic.

T&M
Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!

It is interesting that they attribute the original design of the Phoenix gun to Reeves, who was the company president, instead of Griffen, who actually developed the manufactruring process.

The way I understand it is that Reeves corrected the problems with the Griffin manufacturing process.  The early guns were Griffins and the later were Reeves.  Reeves was not the original designer.  I heard the same with Armstrong, that most of his credit was from Blakely's work.  Is this true?
