.223Handi HB

Got my new H&R .223 HB for Christmas.I gotta work tomorrow but Sunday I'm at the range to break this puppy in.I have a Bushnell Buckhorn 3.5x10-42  mounted and I plan on shooting some Winchester white box to break it in then I'm off to the reloading bench to work up a load.I have leads from 40-60 grains to play with and about 12 different powders  ::)What is everyone shoot in these? Any suggestions?

Before you shoot it...
Did you clean and degrease it?
Did you bed the scope rail and use loctite on the screws?
Did you lap the scope rings?

Lapping the rings probably won't be necessary. However cleaning and making sure there is no oil on the latch shelf is a good idea as is putting an O-ring on the forearm screw stud. Take your time and enjoy yourself shooting.

Lapping the rings is a good idea, and will save a scope from damage thats for sure. The O-Ring works for some, me included with a couple of my Handis, but the RTV bedding works very well too.
Personally I would go out and shoot it and see how it does out of the box. It may suprise you. If not then go through some trouble shooting here in the FAQs and ask around.

I have an ultra varminter that I bought several years ago and it shoots sub MOA groups right out of the box.  I took it to Montana last spring and killed a lot of gofers with it.

SAME HERE!!  I was gratefull to find this!!  My load is a Sierra 53gr match bullet, fed case, H322 powder and a CCI BRII SR primer.

Many guys LOVE the results from that white box ammo!!

Before you get too carried away with a munch of mods , give it a good cleaning and then shot a few rounds , the BB 223 is one of the better shooters right out of the box and may not need much work to get MOA or better .

Now , granted these are not BR rifles , BUT 1/2" groups are very common if you do your part .

Yep, shoot it first as is, right out of the box after a good cleaning!

Like mentioned above, make sure the latch shelf is clean and dry of any oil or grease, and if you can get 1" or better out of the box without doing anything to it, just keep shooting it even more, and your groups will tighten up even more, just because the barrel is getting broken in!

Everything is degreased,cleaned up and ready to go tomorrow.I have a .243 HB that will shoot 80's into the same dime spaced hole all day long at 100 yards with no mods done to it,just straight out of the box.It wears a Bushnell Elite 3200 Firefly in 3x9.I actually shot it at 100yds the first time after break in then moved the target back to 150 yards and with the same POA made that hole bigger.It is my go to deer gun.I also have a 44 magnum that will shoot cloverleafs at 50yrds with the open sights also no mods.Great black bear gun for the tree stand.I had the buffalo classic 45/70 but ended up selling it because I had a chance to buy a new GoldenBoy and .22 pump(Henry's) for the same price I sold the H&R for.I intend to buy the 25-06,the .357 and the .444 next ::)

I have a buddy that loaded mine. He uses 25.5 grains of H335 and a 53 grain Hornady match bullet. I put some cardboard on the forearm screw so that the barrel floats to the screw. I can shoot cloverleafs with mine and this load is devastating on crows and you are able to stay on target even with shots at 50 yards. When you shoot a crow at 200 and able to see the bullet strike, it is cool. This bullet and load is going only around 3000 FPS I think but the birds don't like it that is for sure.

Just got back from the range and I've got a shooter.Full box of shells at 100yrds (winchester white box) and about a 3" string for up and down and about 1" wide with a 3.5x10 power scope.Wind from left to right about 10mph.Off sandbags

Lot of published data for 1:12 twist if that's what you have.
My 223 bull has a 1:9 twist and did not respond to any of those loads.
It works best with a near max load of Hodgdon H380 (27.6-28.0gr) for 40 V-max and 70 Speer.

I shoot 55 grain Nosler ballistic tips or 55 grain pointed soft points from MidwayUSA. I pair these with 25.4 grains of IMR 3031 and CCI primers.
