In TC Contender...Super 16 *verses* full lenght Rifle Barrel.

Considering .35 Rem.  SCOPED !!

Out to 150 yards....How much loss of accuracy?

Your thoughts?

Thanks

"Out to 150 yards....How much loss of accuracy?"

The length of barrel has virtually nothing to do with accuracy potential.

So your are saying off a bench with the same ammo.... a super 16 will hold the same MOA as a 23" rifle ?

You'll lose some velocity, but as sweetwyominghome said accuracy potential isn't a problem with shorter barrels - in fact, a shorter barrel would tend to be more accurate since there is less flex.  One thing to note however is that if you are talking about using iron sights, the reduced sight radius can affect your accuracy with the rifle.

Over the years, I've has a number of pistols and rifles set up in the same calibers, amongst them the .223, 6mm-.223, 6 TCU, .250 Savage, 6.5x.308, 7mm-08 and .308, and in many instances, the shorter barrels were indeed more accurate -- albeit in good barrels, the differences would be measured in fractions of an inch.

Given quality to start with, loads matched to the individual barrel and good shooting technique, a longer 23"  barrel and a shorter Super 16  barrel in the .35 Rem chambering you mention would have similar accuracy potential. There is no cut and dried law of ballistics that dictates the longer barrel would have to be more accurate.

I agree with Sweetwy's assesment of accuracy.  The real difference will come in your ability to hold a very short barreled rifle(carbine) steady while touching off the shot.  I have several S-16 barrels and they are very accurate, but my ability to shoot them accurately is another story.  I can usually shoot them more accurately in handgun configuration than I can as a carbine.

I only know one person who has shot a .35 Remington Contender.  He didn't have a problem with recoil.  I'd go so far as to say he liked it.  But he said the .35 Remington kicked so hard that the one shot he fired through it was enough, and he'd never fire it again.  He also said it was godawful loud, too.  Now, admittedly, he was shooting it out of a 14" pistol, but still...

With that in mind, I think I'd go with the 23" (maybe a 21" instead, but definitely not a 16") just to moderate the noise a little.

I have a 16" 45-70.  It is loud and the recoil is noteworthy.   I would recommend the longer barrels for greater pleasure.

I have a 14" .35 Rem barrel that I think is more comfortable to shoot than my  12" .357 Max barrel..the recoil is more straight back into the hand with out much climb.  I think a 16" .35 Rem would be wonderful from a tree stand.  My only 16" barrel is chambered for the 7-30 Waters.

Sirs,
I have a super 16 35 barrel and as we have all learned, barrel length has very little to do with accuracy when scoped.  Using iron sights the extra barrel length does allow for longer sight radius that greatly assists in accuracy, but when scoped, all the extra barrel length does is add velocity.  In the 35 remington, the velocity loss between a 21 inch barrel and 16 inch is generally less than 100 FPS, not enough for me to quibble over.  My folding stock, super 16 35 rem and 45-70 barreled carbines are the handiest big game rifle you will find on the planet.  They fit right into a backback or get slung over your shoulder and are only about 2 inches longer than a super 14 handgun.  Get to your stand, climb up, unfold the stock and you have a sure fire 150+ yard deer killer using Hornady 180 grain SSP bullets.  Super 16 is a great way to go with the 35 rem.  My only citicism is that the rig is somewhat muzzle-light when shooting offhand, but you can learn to compensate for that with practise at the range.  My 35 barrel has factory sights and I use an old  2.5x Burris fullfield rifle scope in quick release rings, the sights are for back up, the scope though is rock solid and has never failed me yet.

I can not speak on the behalf of a 35rem, but I have a 445 supermag in a 24" heavy barrel.  I prefer the the longer barrel.  It helps to keep muzzle rise down, and helps tame the recoil a bit.  The full size may be alittle heavy for most to want to shoot off hand, and the 16" may be alittle too rowdy for some.  I think it comes down to what you would be more comfortable shooting, that will decide which setup you will be more accurate shooting.
