Switching out a 44 mag barrel
« on: December 29, 2009, 09:21:39 AM »
My apologies to all as I am sure that my question is old news to many and it's probably been discussed here before, but try as I may I cannot find the posts on it.
Anyway, I hunt in Mississippi and am thinking on taking advantage of the expansion of the definition of a primitive weapon here in what was commonly known as muzzle-loader season.  For the past few years the state has included in it's definition of "primitive weapon" certain action and calibers of single-shot rifles, such as the Handi. The main requirement is that the caliber needs to be greater than .35.  It goes without saying that 45/70 has become the hands-down favorite choice for primitive weapon season, but where I hunt it is hardly necessary, so I am leaning toward a .44 magnum instead.  My only problem is that I would love to take advantage of the Handi's ability to switch out barrels without much headache, but as most probably already know, the only barrel you can switch out for if you buy a .44 mag is the 12 gauge shotgun.  So here's the question:  Would it be possible to "back-into" the .44 mag by getting another caliber (say a .308, .30-06, 7mm-08, etc.) and then getting the .44 mag replacement barrel?
As I said, I'm sure that this has been discussed already, but I'd appreciate it if someone could give a late-comer some advice.  Thanks again.

no problem with that, a .44 Mag barrel can be fitted and fired from any centerfire receiver (see FAQ's), and can even be fitted and fired from a shotgun receiver...welcome aboard....<><...:)

I'd buy either a SB2 .44 Mag here on the forum, or buy another complete rifle, high pressure SB2 frame and add your .44 Mag.  The best of both worlds is to buy a complete .45-70 and add the .44 barrel ;)  Then you ream the .44 to .445 Super Mag. and you're shootin .45-70, .44 Special, .44 Russian, .44 Rem Mag and .445 Super. Yer good fer anyting from armadillos ta gators ta buffalers.

Good luck, and good shootin,

Pete

Or wait until next year and get a 35 Whelen barrel too.  ;)
