Need small, lightwt revolver

I should free up a little money in a couple of months and I think I'm going to look for one of the old Sentinels by Hi Standard.  They made a nice little snub nose round butt that would serve nicely.  Snake gun with hot shells is a good excuse to purchase one.  I certainly can't afford what I'd like, that being one of the Scandium .22 S&W's, or I like the new Ruger LCR .22.  Ugly, but very usable.  I like that short barrel Ruger Bearcat, but I want to be able to fire it 3 times in a couple seconds if needed so that leaves a single action out.  Thanks for all the help and suggestions, I really appreciate the input.  44 Man

The LCR-22 may be worth stretching your budget another $100.  8 shots, lightweight, accurate, reliable.  Mine was about $405 with tax.

Yup, the .22 LCR would be a good candidate too.  Also one of the lightwt Taurus .22's.  Just depends what show up used at the right time and price.    44 Man

I have had two dogs bitten The cocker spaniel recovered after 4-5 day. The Great Pyrenees died that night. They were bitten because the didn't have sense to go around and leave the snakes alone. When I find copperheads close to the house, on the steps, etc. where small children play I kill them. If I find them in the fields I walk around. Haven't had one chase me yet.

A Single-10 would make a heckuva .22 in a wheelgun, esp with two cylinders!
 
 
For a decent cheapie 9shot .22LR revolver, surprised noone has mentioned a High Standard Sentinel.  For a "less than" [the best] type kit gun, a good clean copy of one is often a great little gun!
 
Plus with a load rat shot those snakes pictured would still be just as dayde!

I am not seeing ANY small .22 revolvers reasonably priced since Conn.; add a little more to the asking price and the 38Spl. chambered revolvers are a whole lot more gun for the purpose.

Well I have my problem solved!  I found a very clean used silver Taurus Ultra Light 2" barrel .22 for $300.  Put it on layaway but should have it out in a month.  I'm a happy man.  And you are right, I could just carry my old S&W 37 ltwt .38.  But what fun would it be to use a gun you already owned?  44 Man

i would rather have  five rounds  38s  with  a bigger load  of  #9 shot
than to have 10 rounds of 22s....with a tiny load of #12........22mag  has #11

Iffn it dont work out as planned you sure wont have any trouble getting rid of it if you dont want to keep it, ANYTHING CC around here does not stay on the market long.

45-70.gov, I did pick up a box of Speer 44 shot loads for my Charter bulldog and I bought two boxes of Speer shot capsuls for loading into the .38's, so I'm pretty well set.  And I bought a couple more boxes of .22 shot loads, they are still available.  I have been wanting a little more convenient 22 to carry than my old 6" H&R 999.  I dearly love that old gun but I'd like a 'pocket' .22 for occasional use.  We'll have some range notes on this new one when I get it home and get to the range.  44 Man

I picked up a taurus model 94 in 22lr  thats 9 shot for my misses.  Its used  but still in excellent condition.  Its my first taurus  handgun and it seems like a good quality revolver.  My other suggestions would be an older H&R  22lr 9 shot revolver too. These came in shorter barrels too.  but beaware that some are only 6 shots too.

I have the LCR in 22 Long Rifle. It is a great little pocket pistol. So very light and reliable. About 14 oz. Eight rounds of 22 CCI Mini Mag is no joke. I recommend it.

I got tired of having to put a hole in my jeans pocket so I could carry my 7 1/2" Ruger Super BH so my new small, lightweight revolver is a Talo Ruger Birdshead 45ACP.......
Its all relatiive  .

I have the LCR-22 and it's a nice reliable and rugged gun for a good price.  I'm not crazy about the trigger, but the ladies who have tried it really liked it.  The snake shot for .22lr is pathetic, though. 

I ended up paying about 2x the LCR's price for a S&W 351c (7-shot .22 Magnum AirLite Centennial, 11-oz).  It's a little smaller, lighter, and a bit more refined in fit, finish, and contour than the LCR.  It has a stiff trigger, which can make target shooting a challenge, but I want a stiff trigger for a carry gun.  The .22 Magnum shot shells produce a nice softball-size pattern at 9 feet.  With Speer Gold Dots I'm getting usable accuracy out to 7 yards for self defense.  My groups with the 351c are getting smaller, but the light weight and heavy trigger will require concentration and skill to master.

I have never understood the use of shot shells in a .22lr. The shot size is tiny and the spin imparted by the rifled barrel rapidly disperses the shot. Has anyone here tested them at various ranges on cardboard?  I suspect if you are close enough for the shot to be effective you could just step on it.

Not on cardboard but on lemons.  We had someone that had a bunch of then and brought them to the range and were were screwing around with the differernt 22 rounds out of a revolver and the bolt action rifle. 
About 20 feet was it.  out of the rifle it was enough to kill rats excaping from my garage.

 Or sprinkle salt on it's tail (oh wait... that only works with birds). 


 My Dad and I used to use the old style crimped 22 shot shells to shoot dragonflies. At ~5 yds they were effective but past that we'd miss more often than hit. I suppose if you were being attacked by hummingbirds they'd be better than nothing.

Now I would like to have a smootbore rifle. First handgun I shot birdshot out of was an H&R 999 Sportsman break action 9-shot. It was good on starlings to the top of a pear tree. Problem was the crimped all brass cases were difficult to extract.
I tried a 1 1-8 oz load of #6's from a rifled twelve gauge at 40 yards. NOT ONE pellet hit a 36 inch square sheet of paper.
OTOH I have always thought I would like a smoothbore large caliber revolver... .45 Colt or larger.
