G2 Problem
« on: December 24, 2009, 10:21:02 AM »
I recently purchased a new G2 handgun frame. I then bought a new TC 12 inch 22 LR Match barrel from Ed's TCs. I shot the gun and it really did well. Completely satisfied thus far. I then acquired a TC 14 inch 7-30 Waters barrel and several boxes of 7-30 Waters Federal Premium ammo. I shot the gun with the 7-30 barrel a total of 10 rounds and noticed that the primers on all 10 of the spent primers were protruding from the case 0.012 inch. No excess pressure signs were noted and extraction was easy on all rounds. I decided not to shoot anymore until I can find out what is wrong.
I am posting this hopefully to get some thoughts and guidance from you more experienced with the G2.
Thanks,
Don

I have a G2 rifle 7x30 waters and have had no problem so it may be a head space problem. you might stick in a shell and put a straight edge across the face of barrel and see if you have any clearance there that might give you some idea, Is the barrel a factory barrel or another brand?

A factory round in my barrel is 0.005 inch below flush with the breech end measured with a dial indicator and checked again with straight edge and feeler guage. The barrel is a TC factory barrel. Is your rifle barrel a TC barrel?

There are several elements to headspace.  If you do a Google on "contender headspace issues" - you might find some interesting reading.

I believe you said a factory case sits 0.005" below the barrel edge.  How far from the standing breech is the case head when it is 0.005" below the barrel edge?  You can put layers of tape on the case head until there is resistance to closing.  The total thicknes of the tape layers is the actual headspace. Another way is to use feeler gages to measure the distance from the barrel to the standing breech, then add that measurement to your 0.005".  I'm guessing you'll see the total headspace is close to the amount of primer protrusion.

Yep, I was going to say it was a headspace issue as well.  I'm kind of having a similar issue with an Encore rifle in 30-06 AI.  My issue is that it won't detonate the primers on standard 30-06 brass.  I was told it would improve once I start loading the AI brass.

Do the searches as others have indicated and do some reading.  There are a lot of variables to this headspace issue.

Good luck.
