Mueller Tac 2, DNZ Game Reaper
« on: December 29, 2009, 09:22:10 PM »
Mounting a Mueller Tac 2 to a handi, want to use DNZ Game Reaper mount.  Does anyone know if I need to use the high mount, or the X high mount?

Sorry, no. I'm not familiar with that scope and have only seen pictures of the mount..

Take a look at dednutz.com, their website.  I think there is a guide there for how high the scope will sit based on which mount you choose.  I am looking for one for my encore .22-250 barrel too.  I have read some good reviews of these mounts and want to try one. Good luck!

The problem I'm having is that the scope dimensions are not given on Mueller's site, and the difference between the two DNZ mounts is small.  I'm hoping someone either has specific experience, or some general knowledge that will apply, like maybe the high mounts fit all but the largests scopes, or something like that.

Scope objective diameter isn't normaly an issue for H&Rs, 50mm scopes mount fine, hammer clearance is issue, see the FAQs, there's a little  info on the DNZ ring mount there. Concerning the Tac II, I have two of them on H&Rs, it has a small power ring and ocular bell, I use medium Burris Signature Zees with no hammer mods. For height comparison, medium Sig Zees are .270" tall, the H&R base is .400" tall, so that makes the measurement from the top of the chamber swell to the bottom of the scope tube .670".

Thanks, Tim, that tells me what I need to know.  How do you like the Tac II's?  As good as everyone says?  I'm planning on using it on a 223 for shots 500 yards and less.

The only thing the Leupold VXII has on the Tac II is eye relief, other than that, it's as good an optic if not better, specially when you can get one for around $200.  ;)

That's what I paid for a LNIB I bought a couple years ago here in the classifieds, I think I paid $240 for the new one when they first came out.

Oh Timmy, Timmy..  ::) try selling the TAC II to 5-6 different people, waiting twenty or thirty years and then send it in to the manufacturer for a warranty repair... IF they are even still in business, it is going to cost you something more then the shipping!! Cause thats all it costs to send a VXII in to Leupold!!

It may perform and work just fine. Cost wise be a good deal. But its not the equal of the Leupold VXII...  ;D ;) ;D ;)

Actually the TAC II is more often compared to the VXIII than the VXII, it's built in Japan by the same OEM that makes Sightron.

I have to say that Mueller has stood behind their scopes 100% for me, I have 8 of em, one had a defective seal, I sent it to Mueller and had a new scope in less than a week from when they received it, it doesn't get better than that, all it cost me was return shipping.

Their scopes are more practically priced than Leupolds and offer a lot more scope for the money, whether they'll still be in business in the distant future remains to be seen, but I can say the same for any scope marketer in this economy. Even Leupold is now offering the Redfield line(built in Beaverton OR also!) at the same price line as most Mueller optics, so even they recognize that not everyone wants to spend $300-$400 for optics when a $150 optic will serve most hunters just as well.  ;)

 Tim and guys,
First and foremost, I do not work for Leupold and gain nothing but the peace of mind in knowing I am helping my fellow handi-haulic in recommending a Leupold scope. I know I am somewhat of a broken record when it comes to singing the praises of the Leupold. I also know that the cost factor is prohibitive when some people initially look at a Leupold. BUT, I have said it many times, just BUY THEM USED!!  The VXI, VXII as well as VARI XII are available for the less than $200. That the same or less than your looking at for a new <insert favorite brand here> scope. No exaggeration, I must have 20 Leupold's. Out of those, I have 8 2X7X33 VXII/ VARI XII's. I can honestly tell you that only 2 or 3  where purchased new!!! Ore than a few purchased right here on GBO. Sometimes I return them to the factory straight away for a CK up, other times I have the reticule or parallax changed. There customer service is beyond top notch! They have even returned scopes to me BEFORE I PAID for the service!! Yup, returned it with a bill for services rendered!! This is all but unheard of today outside of face to face transactions between known patrons.

Now I know there is other good scopes out there, but honestly, the more of them I buy, the more I appreciate Leupold. (I have taken your advice on a couple different models and they have been fine)

I am sure that a 1 or 2 hundred dollar scope will suit the majority of guys buying a handi. All I am trying to get across is there is FAR more to a product than its initial cost. If someone can get a much better quality scope used, then send it right back to the factory for a simple check-up and still pay under the 200. That’s the same they would have spent on a lesser quality new scope. I think that they are better off. Can another manufacturer make a scope that is equal to or better then Leupold, sure they can. But if a comparison is to be made, lets be sure the bigger picture is in focus. Service after the sale, quality of the product as well as costs involved make up the whole equation.
I know many members here may not be able to afford a new Leupold. Just as you mention, Leupold knows this too. There recent acquisition of the REDFIELD name proves this. Now time will tell how the quality or lack there of, of this new scope line pans out. On face value, it should fit this lower cost scope nitch. Because the first thought many people have when they read the word Leupold is $$$. Yes they are expensive, at least when purchased new. Many handicap themselves with this and look no further. Money is hard earned and needs to go farther these days. Now, I am not independently wealthy, I don’t have a 6 figure salary and just like most of us, my $$ need to go further these days. Also just like you, I am just trying to pass along worthwhile information. In an effort to help someone needing to get the most for his money. I'll put my money on something that has a proven track record, I’ll buy Leupold.

I don’t want this to have a negative tone. This is not an argument, more of a friendly retort. I have the utmost respect for you and your opinions. I sometimes just feel our true intent is lost in the text we rite.

I appreciate what you're saying. Leupold is THE NAME in scopes, and your experiences with them verify their great reputation.  I also appreciate what you're saying about buying used for cheap and taking advantage of their transferable warranty.

All my life, however, I've really appreciated the hard to find great deal that I think Mueller optics are.  It's hard to find one bad thing said about them, and I've searched hard.  One of the basic tenets of rifle shooting is that with optics you get what you pay for.  I love finding a product that breaks that rule a little.  Again though, I appreciate what you've shared - intend to use it to buy a used Leupold
