Anyone shoot the 45/410 Survivor yet?
« on: December 28, 2009, 06:22:32 PM »
I added the .45/.410 barrel to my existing .410 so I could shoot the .45lc. I had a gunsmith drill and tap for weaver mounts and have also added a "better" Tasco 3x12x40 scope. Before I go too far into the story, I do have a better quality scope to try out (Bushnell Elite 3200) if I cannot turn things around with the Tasco. My problem is unreliable accuracy. I am all over the place at 50 yards from a bench. The ammo I am using is Collins Cartridge remanufactured from Texas. I also will be trying another factory load to be sure. My basic question is has anyone else shot the 45/410 Survivor, and what were your results? I shot competition in High School and belong to a range that I shoot at very often. Also avid hunter and shoot thouands of rounds each year. It's not the shooter.  ;) Also wondering if anyone has used the .45+p in the sb1 case. There is a 79% increase in pressure from the standard load to the +p, but even at +/- 20,000 CUP I feel the receiver could take it. They are quite stout afterall. Before I do anything I need to tackle the accuracy issue. Ideas? Comments?

NEF .410 with .45/.410 Survivor accessory barrel.
H&R 12ga. Pardner Turkey with 20ga. Ultra Slug barrel (sweet) and additional 12ga. choke tube barrel.

I also shoot Mossberg 4x4 in .270 (.75 in groups at 150 yards), Mossberg 20 ga. pump, Rossi Varmint Master in .223, Marlin Model 60, JC Higgins Model 50 in .22, Stoeger Condor O/U 12 and 20ga. trap, Remington 597 in .22, Bushmaster M4 5.56/.223, T/C Firehawk Muzzle Loader converted to accept the 209 primer. I shoot a Parker Hunter-Mag as well.

Welcome! Did you remove the choke tube when shooting 45LC in it? Most everyone that's added sights or a scope to their 45/410 have  been able to shoot 3"-4" 100yd groups. I wouldn't worry about shooting Ruger/TC loads, the freebore in that barrel will reduce pressures considerably.

Was what I was wondering when I read your post.

Ahhh..yes, I did remove the .410 "straight rifle" choke tube. That would make a huge mess otherwise! I suppose I will try some different ammo. And thanks for the welcome!

Also wanted to mention the gap between the .45 and longer .410 before the bullet contacts the lands. Maybe this is the reason for the innaccuracy? Seems to me that it would stabilize by the time it pops out. I will also take a close look at the crown. I had an issue with a Remmy crown that spat rounds all over the place. Any other ideas would be great!

There have been many pages of discussions on getting the bullet closer to the lands using longer brass, do a search on 450 Mongo.

Not a bad plan. I bought the barrel specifically to shoot the LC anyway. I already have the OE .410 barrel if I choose to shoot shot shells. I will not (ever) run a .410 shot shell throught the rifled barrel because of this fact. Another issue is I have +/- 100 rounds of .410 97gr. sabots that I would love to have a rifled .410 barrel for. That would be an efficient, close range deer slayer but aside from a pure custom barrel, I am out! Ah well. My focus is getting the Colt to shoot as it should. I would even be satisfied with 2" groups at 50-75 yds. That is well within my hunting range anyway. The forest is too dense in my area for long shots. Getting close is far more rewarding besides...

I may just be getting the chop saw out. Do you have any pics of your work? What did you use for re-crowning? Thanks!

There are links in the FAQs on DIY cutting and crowning at home.  ;)

jeeper,
no pics available... sorry, did'nt think it would be a "informative thang"   ;D

i cut the barrel to legal minimum length and recrowned with a 1933 milwaukee/allis crowning tool
ceramic ball on a palm stick. it was my dad's, and i can see him now
twirl'n for hours in his gun shop..
he made some mighty fine 220 swift barrels in savage and marlin. i have afew of them, but they won't be shot today... but did shoot them when i was 45 years younger
cus there restored wall hangers of memories.... ;)

i'm glad tim said that it would possibly be ok to use ruger or t/c loads in the
45/410 cus the gap jump.... i did'nt want to start a war about that,    THANKS TIM !!!! ;)

try the mod...it worked for mine and my grandsons shooter.

made the colt step up to tha plate !!! ;D
