45 cal and 195 Dead center = Dead Deer
« on: October 20, 2003, 03:07:04 PM »
Shot my first Buck in the early Maryland Muzzles season with the new Bullberry barrel. 130+ lbs 6pt. Also my county has unlimited doe tags yes unlimited, so I plan to keep shooting and test bullet performence out to 250 yards.

45 cal 195grain Dead Center, 120 grain 777, Hornet conversion.

108 yard shot, the deer ran 173 feet per my Garmin GPS maps 76.  The deer was quatering towards me, I shot thru the upper lungs the bullet traversed the body cavity and stopped in the opposite hip.  The upper lungs were destroyed.

Good performance for a long range bullet.  Still Working on a 250 yard load.  Has anyone tried more than 120 grains of 777 in powder form in a 45 cal barrel???

I have some of the Dead Centers in 220 grain that I want to try out.  I shot a buck in Calvert County opening day and a second in PG on Saturday.  Got to love that early ML season.  I was hoping to try the dead centers but gould not get to the range,  Used Hornady 300 grain SST.  They are awsome bullets.  My firt deer went about 60 yards the second dropped in its tracks.  These bullets would probably not be good for longer ranges but up close they are very fatal.

I have a bullberry .45. I shoot 120gr 777 with 240 Dead Centers getting 1" from a "clean" barrel..that is 2 wet patches of TC#13 and a dry patch between shots...second patch comes out clean...I used fritz to lap the barrel before I shot it and did a "Moly Fusion" treatment on it...has a stage 2 breech plug ..no 22 hornet conversion.
Our muzzelloading season ended yesterday and I was too picky and so the score"
me : 0   deer: 1
back to my bow til next month

Stumpy,

Have you tried any loads in your 45 with more than 120 grains of 777?

TCAS,

I have not tried more then 120 grs 777 in powder but I have tried 3 777 pellets...when I got my barrel I spoke to Fred at lenght about using 3 pellets and "hot" loads of pryodex ( I was not aware of  777 then). he told me he shoot "double" loads both with powder charged and as a test did a double load ( powder bullet-powder bullet) and found no signs of any problems..although he did not recommend I try it LOL. He basically told me to use any loads I wanted as he felt his setup was adaquate. I was prepared to go to 130-140 grs of loose 777 in my quest for a load that shoots as my whole purpose for the .45 barrel was to try to create a 250+ yd shooter.  I have not had time to do any shooting since I got it shooting with 120 777 and was running low on bullets and have not ordered anymore as hunting season has taken over my "shooting" season.  I have lots to work on as I ahave a Knight DISC, Savage MLII, Encore .50. Encore .45, and BB .45...I am sort of a gun fanatic. Anyway don't want to get anyone upset or excited but between me and you I would not be afraid to and fully intend to try "hotter" loads in my quest.
To all those that that read this I am not crazy and I understand all the  risk and use every precation when doing this and I do not recomend anyone do this..it is outside the norm and EXCEEDS any recommendations.

Good Luck

Yes,

But with no accuracy.

My best results have been with 105-110 grains . . . you're already loading hotter than I can get anything to group with.
