Favorite Rifles in the Safe
« on: December 31, 2009, 08:56:57 AM »
This is a thread to show off our every day guns.  What we always carry and why.

Thanks to Bigeasy for the alternate thread '..."Safe Queens"...' where we can post what is NOT being used at all.

I always carry and use a Winchester Model 70 Classic Featherweight in 270 caliber.  It was the 2nd rifle I ever purchased, the first being a 30-30 Winchester Model 94.

The Model 70 has a Bausch & Lomb 3 x 9 scope (the 30-30 was top eject and iron sights), Schnabel forend, and some of the most beautiful checkered lines on a fine rifle as I had seen at the time.  It has been a trusted friend and hunting companion for nearly 20 years and has taken the bulk of my deer, hogs, and turkey over that time.

I am a varmint rifle addict.
The true safe queens I have are twin Sako rifles, one in 222 the other 22-250.
There is also a Colt flat top that I purchased as a coyote rifle that I never took out of the box
My go to varmint rifle is a Ruger Mk2 in 222 with a Nikon Titanium scope.

:o :o :o :o Favorite rifles in the safe...What we always carry...hummm, depends on the time of year...From Jan. though May??Maybe this is more than you want..
Right now my favorite:
big game rifle : 700 Rem. with a 26 in Lilja barrel in .300 Win. I have used the rifle since 1970, it has a custom stock, an this is third barrel...It has taken more big game than I care to take credit for.....
Varmit rifle:700 Rem. ADL in .22-250 it has a #5 26 inch Douglas barrel it is also on its third barrel. I have had it since the middle 70's...
Combo: 700 ADL in .25-06 it has a 27 in Douglas barrel. Haven't had it all that long maybe 6-7 years...Love it for some coyote shooting, I have issues with it on big game, but it has taken a very nice mulie, antelope, and several whitetails..

Can I pick two?

Browning .308 with BOSS.
I won a HAM at a fire department a few years ago target shooting against others using their 22s.

AR15 with 24" SS fluted barrel. Built peace at a time about 4 years ago. Killed a lot of P-dogs...

I have a Bushmaster that is scoped that I have used for everything from hogs to coyotes, and it's scoped but, it does more safe time than anything I have which is most of the time.
These are my two go to guns for just about everything except night hunting which I do seldom now a days.
The top one is a Model 92 Winchester clone in 357 magnum. I ordered it about 6 years ago from Navy Arms, and when I got it I stripped their finish off the stocks and found some really nice walnut. I hand rubbed 6 coats of True Oil on them, and they came out looking exactly like Winchester stocks of the 1950s.
I also cut a new ejector, and extractor for it, along with hand honing the action. It is super smooth, and a tack driver. I probably carry it a little more than the bottom rifle, and shoot a 158 grain jacketed soft point in it, at about 2000 fps.
The bottom rifle, a carbine, is a Winchester Model 94 in 3030, and January 1st TONIGHT, I will have been shooting this same rifle for 52 years. Dad bought it new in 1958 and gave it to me. I have shot very little factory loaded ammo thru this rifle, and a 250 yard shot for it is not a problem. My standard is a 150 grain jacketed soft point at 2400fps.
I have news paper clippings, with pics of me carrying this rifle when I used to do some tracking on man hunts back in the 70s and early 80s, and some real outlaws have seen the business end of it.
When I get in my Jeep, one of these rifles ALWAYS goes. When I take a trip in the car, one of these rifles ALWAYS goes. Always.
They have identical sights as you can see, and they are sighted the same on target.
Pretty boring stuff I guess by today's standards, but they work for me, and have for over a half century.

Happy New Year!!

Hmmmm...I seem to shoot some combination of these 6 every week, though it really depends on upcomming planned hunting.  In that case, I'll shoot something else for several months before a trip.  I'm planning a spring trip to VT with friends for something or other, so since the summer I've been shooting the following:

Rimfire:
-Ruger 10/22 (Altemonte), tweaked by CPC with a weaver 3x9 AO rimfire scope, or,
-Savage 93BV in 17HMR with a weaver classic V 4x16AO scope

Centerfire Bolt:
-Rem 700 Lite Varmint SS in 223, timney trigger with a Leupold VariX II 6.5x18 target dot
-Rug 77 MK II / Shaw 22" med-heavy fluted barrel, timnet trigger in .243 win w Leupold 4x12x50
-Rem KS Mntn (custom shop) rifle 30.06 with a 3.5x10 Leupold VariX III

Semi:
-Bushy DCM Match Target (timney trigger installed) w Leupold VariX II Target 6.4x18

That's the one right there that I've always wanted to see. Thanks for sharing that picture. I know that rifle means a lot to you.

Yes it does. I was an eight year old boy when I first put my hands on that rifle. At 60 years old we are old friends.

There is no "one gun" I can pick, there are several that I always find myself turning too, even though I have three packed safes.

For small game hunting, its my Kimber bolt .22 with a 2x7 scope.  The gun looks good, handles good, and shoots like a target rifle.  Almost feels like cheating when I take it into the woods.

Big game, its a tough choice, but I would say my early model Browning BLR in .358 win.  with a 1.75X5 scope.   I can load it with cast slugs at 1200 fps for plinking or small game, or 250 grain Noslers at 2300 fps for about anything that walks.  I have lost track how many deer this rifle has killed, along with several hogs, black bear, one moose, and a few dozen grouse for the pot.

Varmint would be my CZ .204 Ruger with the Nikon 4.5x14 scope.  Even though I have only owned it about a year, it has quickly become a favorite.  Pretty wood, great trigger, and so accurate, it stands right with my heavy barrel 22/250's, at about 4 pounds less weight.

Behind the seat in my truck?  A Bushmaster semi auto M4 with a Burris 2x7, a Burris Fastfire holo sight, and a Streamlight TLR 1 flashlite, along with 5 30 round mags of assorted ammo.  Never jams, and is way too accurate for what it is.

So, these four, I would say...

Larry

Whenever I buy a new gun, it is immediately my favorite.  Then I begin seeking my next favorite.  Once in a few years I return to the safe for an old favorite, but rarely.  Just can't have enough "favorites".  Drives the wife crazy.

I used to do that, and when I turned about 55 years old, I sold them all off but, one auto rifle, two leveractions, a pump shotgun, a fighting auto shotgun, and a couple of pistols. I just got tired of lookin at em, and messin with'em.
I wish though I had kept an 1895 Cowboy in 4570. I have a bunch of brass, ammo, and bullet mold for it. I might get another one of those. Never know.

Right now its my rem model 7 7mm-08 that I bought just last year. Sweet little rifle that carries real nice. Havnt killed anything with it yet. I found myself in shotgun zone this year. Used it during late doe season. Passed on a little button buck. Will have to wait till next year.
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting
