The 7mm-08 cartridge is just fine for deer.  The 700 rifle is not the best for hunting.   They have weak extractors, push feed, safeties that don't hold the firing pin when on and other less than desireable features..   A M70 type safety matters when unloading a hot chamber.

It's a great rifle.  I sold all my boltactions but one because my 700ADL in a CDL stock was the only one I used.

Many people like the 7mm-08 and has often been repeated it almost duplicates the ballistics of the 7 x 57 Mauser which is a well known quantity. I would have no trouble hunting with one, its simple lazyness that prevents me from adding another caliber to my loading bench.  A 308 with Speer BTSP 150's over 42 grains of RL15 does not kick much and kills the mighty WT deer just fine.  Most of the folks I hunt with use a 30-06 as they are not gun afficiando's, I have taken to killing them with a 257 Roberts shooting 100 grain TSX bullets over 46.5 grains of H4350.  I have a new 308 load with a 130 grain TTSX but was not able to score with it this year. So the 7-08 is a great cartridge duplicating an old soldier that has been around for years! If I had 1000 140 grain bullets I sure would buy one!

You forgot to mention the Reminton's great FOR (Fire On Release) feature.  That feature allows you to unload a loaded chamber simply be slipping the safety into the "Fire" position - no need to work the bolt or touch the trigger.  Remington estimated up to 50% of some models included this "feature".

As I said before, the 7mm-08 is a great deer cartridge.  If one can't make it work there is a problem with bullet selection or bullet placement, or both.

Yes, the 7mm-08 is a great deer caliber.  Just ask the 8 pt this past Wednesday.  85 yards, 120 gr Sierra SPT @ 2800 fps, in the neck, Bang Flop.
Shot placement really IS important for any caliber.

I can tell you my father and a friend of his both have 7mm-08 in bolt guns. Between the two of them I have not heard of more then one bullet needed to do the job. Do your best to place your shot, and it won't go far.....if anywhere.
