Using rabbit fur for flies and ultralight jigs?
« on: February 17, 2004, 09:28:03 AM »
Has anyone used[cottontail] rabbit fur/hair for flies or ultralight jigs?I didn't get any source of deer hair this past year, but cottontails appear plentiful this winter.
Any quirks in using the fur/hair?
I'll be fishing streams in western or northern New York.
Thanks.

I use dyed bunny fur on some steelhead patterns, It looks very similiar to marabou adding a very life like appearance. The only problem I find with these limp feather or firs is sometimes when tied long, strands will loop under the hookbend screwing up a presentation. Deer hair is nice because it stays where you put it and is great for shallow/surface patterns but I find it too bulky and it floats making it poor material for bottom dredgers.
