357 Maximum
« on: December 31, 2009, 06:16:39 AM »
Picked up what should be my last gun of 2009 yesterday...   Decent little 7.5 inch 357 Maximum.   Little gun feels like it has had a trigger job.  Trigger feels good but the wannabe Gun Plumber didn't have hollow ground screwdrivers... The fix will come easy with a full Bisley conversion.   Absolutely no flame cutting on the top strap.   Current plan is to give it a chance to shoot before we consider making it a 414...

Axehandle,

Do you mind my asking how much you paid for your Max?
I have a one with 10" barrel that I am putting on gun broker.
I'd like to see what the market is doing.
Thanks

LOL,

Where were YOU a week ago? ;)

Sometimes timing just makes you crazy don't it?

The fella who is going to list it, a local dealer with FFL, rated the gun at about 95%.
I traded for it a little over a year ago and have put about 40+ rounds down it.
I can scratch some pics up if you guys are interested.

Axehandle,
From all that I've heard, you should just convert that one before you shoot it.
Apology for taking over your thread.....................lc

We definitely need pics.    A link to the GB listing would be good too.   Don't worry about the thread....  Better move it to the classifieds before the moderators catch us and whack our palms though!  :D

It would have been long gone on one of my forums.  I am amazed Lloyd let it go this long.

The 414 is a 41 mag case stretched to 1.6 inches.... Requires a long cylinder gun...  Brass comes from Starline and is marked "414 Gates."  Elgin Gates had the brass manufactured before he died....  There may have actually been a few 414 Sevilles made...  Might be some Dan Wessons....  The 414 on the Ruger just requires a rechamber of the 357 Max cylinder and a 41 cal barrel.... Plus all the "extras" like oversize basepin, Bisley conversion, sights, etc...   ;D

Ruger never made a stainless Maximum....  Most current loading manuals include the 357 Maximum...

I have a scoped 10.5 incher and the 7.5 just like yours. I like them so much I can't see changing the calibur, If I was gonna do that I think I'd go with the Dan Wesson supermag, The Rugers are just so much rarer.  I use 180 gr LBT style WFNGCs out of mine with IMR 4227 with the same load used in my handi max. 8)

These things make tasty customs....   :P  The one pictured below is a 445 that came out of John Gallagher's shop...   It has all the typical stuff you would do to slick one up plus a Bisley conversion...

Great Pics!! Love that Bisley conversion.

You guys know more about these than I do, for sure. I borrowed a Dan Wesson years ago for a little bit in the 357Supermag persuasion. It was neat. I wanted the 414Supermag (being a 41mag nut) but never saw one to try out. I later bought a used Ruger SuperBlackhawk 357Max with the 7.5 barrel off GB and what a disappointment. Using strctly factory ammo in it, it came with 6 boxes of Remington 158's, it spit lead like crazy. I could feel it back on my face. I probably should have sent it to Ruger for checkup, but instead found someone who wanted it worse than I did. Gave it to him for a weekend trial and he gladly gave me what I had in it so we were both happy. I think what I really learned was that I didn't like a handgun operating in that pressure class, anymore. Thinking more about a little Marlin or a Rossi in one of the 41 Wildcats from Gary Reeder.

That a nice looking Maximum. I'd give it a chance before you convert it. I have 3 right now, a Ruger with a scope that's a great shooter with 180 grain bullets, another Ruger NIB that I'm saving, and a Seville 10 incher that's also a really good shooter. I hope you enjoy yours.

Ruger never made a stainless Maximum....

Actually....   They did produce 3 I believe and all went to personal close friends and/or employees.  I believe one sold last yr to a private collector and it went for a LOT of cash.
