Triple 7 and Cleanshot?
« on: December 16, 2003, 07:00:50 AM »
Awhile back I purchased some 777 and really liked the advantages of the cleanup and most likely won't consider going back to Pyrodex. I've also heard of a new powder called Cleanshot. Has anyone tried both? What in your opinion are the pros and cons of each? Thanks for any advice or opinions.

Some say Triple 7 and CleanShot are both clean burning with water cleanup and no sulfur smell. The significant difference is that CleanShot is pretty much on par with standard blackpowder in strength, while Triple 7 is quite a bit hotter.

Dutch, Cleanshot is not a new powder, as a matter of fact it has been discontinued thanks to a lawsuit they lost to the makers of Pyrodex. All over a patent infringement issue over pelletized powder.

There is a new powder out called American Pioneer powder, from what I hear it is the new and improved Cleanshot with a new name. Its available in powder form and a stick form to compete with pyrodex and 777 pellets. My brother bought some in stick form. He didn't like he went back to powder.

I used Cleanshot from the day I bought my Encore both powder and pellets it was decent easy clean up and shot well. When they went under I switched to 777. I like it a lot. I'll stick with it.

Here's American Pioneer's web site check it out if you want

The main issue with the sugar based powders is the very hard-to-control carmelization process, which gives uneven velocities, and in the case of "American Pioneer"-- has resulted in folks pouring water out of their barrels (literally) in high humidity enviornments.

The American Pioneer re-release does not seem to have addressed those issues. Triple 7 is far more consistent by comparison.

When it comes to sulfurless BP subs, there really isn't much that can be burned other than sugar. The carbon has to come from somewhere, if we aren't burning charcoal than it has either been fructose or ascorbic acid based products. It looks like someone will have to go a long, long way to top Triple 7 at the moment.
