Hornady SST bullets in Huntsman
« on: December 17, 2009, 10:27:44 AM »
I have been using the 250gr 45cal ones in 50cal with 2 pellets of triple-7. I get good accuracy, but after the first shot can't hardly stuff the next one down the barrel. What can a guy do to help this? I know that you can brush the barrel  but on a follow up shot there isn't time. I've been thinking of putting a little bullet lube on the sabot, would this help out? Its the same with blackpowder and pyodex. I tied power belts but whern't as accuarate.  Zeak

Try a little spit on the sabot. If that dont help/ You can try some crush rib sabots. My Omega X7 has a tight bore. Just about need a jack hammer to load that 2nd shot if I use the sabots that come with the Hornady SSTs
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

If you can get them, try the T/C or Hornady 2 petal Easyglides.  T/C sabots load hard in my wife's but the easy glides load well, even after long range sessions.  Don't lube the sabots as accuracy heads south fast...

I had the same problem with the SSTs...and it seemed like it was the biggest problem on a clean or only fired once barrel.  That is actually why I ended up breaking my factory rod on my Huntsman.

Spit was tried and it was alright but then I started carrying a little bit of Bore Butter on a rag in a little plastic bag and it works great.

BTW, out of all of the bullets I tried, those are the most accurate in my .50 Huntsman.

i had the same problem with the 250gr sst using the old black sabot, and this year i switched to the 250gr sst with the new red low drag sabot, same ballistics as the black sabot and with 75% less loading resistance, plus it shot better out of my sidekick, got a nice 1" 3 shot 100 yard group with a truglo 30mm 5moa red dot.

also i'm shooting 3 pyrodex pellets, i tried 777 pellets but they were dirtier for me, so that could be your problem there, also i remember reading somewhere that hornady claims that lube on the sabot will effect accuracy, dunno if its true or not so you'll have to experiment

also i'm assuming your having problems with the black sabot, if your having problems with the red sabot then i dont know what to tell you  ???

Another idea to try is the mmp 3-petal ez sabots.
This is what I use with a 240 gr .45 cal. hornady bullet,
and it works good for me. Just my 2 cents worth.

Use the same bullets in my Sidekick, but I use Blackhorn 209 powder and I have no problems with loading the barrel again, as a matter of fact have shot the ML several times in a row without having any roblems loading the SST's, even without cleaning.

I had a hard time loading the .45 250gr SST black sabot in my Huntsman.  I switched to the Hornady .44 240gr HP/XTP with the green sabot and they fit nice shot after shot and they group well for me.  Yesterday I dropped a nice doe at 75 to 80 yards with my Huntsman.  Bang Flop.
