unless i missed it. i just got my first handi 45-70 for CHRISTmas, although im only 25 i am a big fan of the decoratve wood on traditional rifles. wonder if you guys had tried your hand at checkering the pallet wood stocks or would i do better purchasing the walnut stock and start there. ive never done checkering but with the proper learnin i catch on quick. any suggestions or pics from you guys who have done this already. ive refinished some stocks already with good results, but not any checkering yet. thanks in advance

Get the tools and have at it. The wood ain't exactly the highest quality so I don't think I'd go real fine with the checkering.
Just take your time and have fun with it.

Try the traditional English flat checkering. Otherwise I'm afraid you'd get a lot of grain tearing. Try a piece of pine and you'll get the idea.

well i looked on the midway site for the tools about $50 give or take. ima measure some i have and get an idea of lines per inch i want. ill practice on some and then im get a walnut stock and forend and make a beauty
