:)  :)  After alot of load development I have found my load for my Wyoming antelope. This load is awsome out of my 16" barrel and shoots soooo good! I can hardly wait.

7-30 waters 16" ss barrel (no brake)
Burris 2x-7x scope
120 gr. ballistic Tip
36gr  ww748
WLR primer
ww formed 30-30 brass.
 This loads goes 2534fps and the extreme spread is a whopping 7fps. Very consistent and is shooting under an inch most of the time.

Just had to share! Look out speed goats!

Sounds like it will do the trick.  Are you going to use shooting sticks ? That combo should shoot well to over 200 yds. :D

Nice.....Hey, foxcaller try some 139gr SST's with 30grs of H-322 it shot 2248fps in my 14" tube and was accurate as all get-out.Good load for deer.

Ought to get the job done for you fine foxcaller.... please post pictures when you get your buck.

What I bought for goats is a 15" Bullberry 6.5 Super Bower and it wears a Burris 10X Target scope.... but shots in UT and NV are usually a bit further in between AND a bit farther than they are in WY.   :wink:

Longwinters, I will take sticks but I prefer to get prone and go off my pack or something a little more solid that the sticks if I can.  Off the bench I would be very confident with even a 300 yard shot but I really don't want to haul a concrete bench and sandbags around with me so I am going to try and  get that 200 yd shot where I am good off  the sticks.
 
Pj, I have some of those 139gr sst's but have not tried them in the 7-30 yet. I am a 7mm fan and they shoot great out of my 280 and 7 rem mag  so I bet they would shoot out of this Waters barrel too.

ladobe, sounds like you have put together a nice gun too! Hope you do well. I will certainly post the results of my hunt when I return. Hopefully I will have a good story or two.

I'm very glad that you posted that here. I was alway curious what my Contender would do. Many years ago, I had a Carbine barrel cut down to 15 1/2 " because I liked the taper of that particular barrel AND it is much easier it attach a sling stud to the forward part of the carbine stock without it splitting. I use the Harris bi-pods attached to the Stud. My barrel loves all the bullets up to and including the 140 BT's. Many groups out of this gun shoot .375 to .5 @ 100 yds as long as the shooter does his part. I liked this rig so well I found a 22 Hornet barrel and had it cut back to 12" and rechambered to 22 K-Hornet. Great looking - Great shooting guns.

I've never chronied my loads - but that toy is coming. It's good to see hard data on this rig. You have a setup extremely close to what I shoot. Good luck on your hunt with this - I for one am very anxious to here about how it works. Please keep us posted!!

I finally  get to sit down and post a few lines on my Wyoming  antelope hunt. It was great! I used the mentioned load in in the Waters to take a nice buck and also a smaller doe. I shot the buck at 265 yards as he was quartered toward me. He had a bunch of does up against a fence and was not gonna let them roam too far. The shot took him right through the top of his right front leg. He ran about 60 yards and stopped. My friend told me I better shoot again but about that time he started teetering and went legs up. My first ever antelope. We had to make a long crawl to get this guy and I am still digging cactus out of mt knees!  The 120 gr Ballistic tip travelled the length of the antelope and I found jacket and core lodged in the left ham about 2 inches apart. The doe was a 190 yard shot and I pancaked her hard. The shot hit her in the forward part of the spine and passed on through. All in all I was pleased with the performance of the Waters and the B-Tip. Next up is a cow elk hunt in Northern Az right after Thanksgiving. I am going to use my 45-70 barrel for this hunt. I have worked up a load using a 350gr Hornady FP that goes right at 1700fps. I am anxious to see how this will perform on a big animal like an elk. I will report back with results if I am lucky enough to get one.
