First turkey
« on: November 12, 2009, 09:47:29 AM »
Well, yesterday I went and traded my Taurus 608 .357 for a Pardner 20 guage and a Marlin 60.

Mounted a scope on the 60 last night and went out today squirrel hunting.  Shot 3 fox squirrels within 80 yards of a few turkeys and they didn't seem to give a hoot at all....they just wondered off.   Well, it just so happens I had an idea where they might be headed.

Took the squirrels back to the jeep and shed the hunter orange for my leafy camo.  I had the 20 in the jeep so took it out and headed off the flock.

Nice going!

Was deer hunting with my xbow last Sat. morning and heard a flock of turkeys walking down the hill towards me.  About 6 birds were feeding directly in front of my treestand so I decided to try the bow on the nearest one, about 20yds. estimated distance.  Either the bird moved or it reacted to the sound of the xbow because all I got was tail feather stuck to the dirt with the bolt!  About 20 birds flew out of the woods behind me too, what a sight.

Thats cool! I shot my first Kansas turkey today with a single shot 16 ga with heavy load 7.5 shot. I could have shot many squirrels but I could see turkeys about 80 yrds away so I had a stalk turkey and forget about squirrels today. Fun fun fun.

I use #6 Hevi-Shot 2 3/4, but hunt in heavy cover and shots are 30 yards or less

Nice first turkey! Here in NY, we grow them big. Here is a pic of my first bird. 22lbs, 10" beard and 1.5" spurs. I have since takes one larger one. See "Big Foot".
