2X or 4X for deer????
« on: October 16, 2003, 03:24:00 PM »
Contender 10" barrels,,,got a 357 mag and a 44 Mag. Got the 4X on the 357 and the 44 is coming in mail. Have someone wanting to sell me a 2X Leupold [$100] and a friend is telling me the 4X is much better. I hunt deer here in Georgia at no more than 65 yards,,or else I'll be toting a rifle with Leupold 2.5-8X. BUT,,if toting the Contender 357 or 44,,,would the 2X be ok??
Opinions welcome here!!

2x all the way! for close range(under 100) 2x will give you a wider field of view. that will come in a lot handier for walking or moving game. it's still tough at that! 4x will be better for target or longer shots, but will be a hinderance for close or moving game. :D

The 2x Leopold is my favorite scope on my hunting handguns for all the reasons mentioned by the other poster.  If it is in good shape, buy it.  If it is good shape and you do not want it, have him get in touch with me, I would buy it.

Alan,

2x is the way to go.  I used a 4x Leupold for one season and the limited FOV made me crazy.  I went out an purchased a 2-7 Burris and am very pleased.

Blessings!

I took my 2x leo off my 44 because it seemed to make the deer SMALLER ! It does have a large field of view, but I just do NOT shoot at moving game. I have 4x or variables on my scoped handguns and have been very successful with them.I can see as late as the guys using 2x scopes so that isn't a problem. I'd get the scope because it is a good price. If I found I did not like it ,it is a good barter piece. It can also be sold quickly, as you already have one offer    jh

The 2X should do fine out to 100, good view and nice and bright. Like Jhalcott said it does seem to make em look farther away. Wish Leuopold would make a 3X that should be about perfect.

Alan

I like a 2X on a "woods gun" like the 367 or 44.  My choice in the Nikon.  It is brighter and has a larger FOV than a Leupold.  I've owned both.  I agree with what others have said about the 4X, FOV is smaller.  I thought the Burreis 2-7X would be the best of both world but it is too large in my opinion for a hunting gun that will be fired at under 100 yds.

I had a 2x-6x and a 2x-7x and I leave them set down around 2-3x when hunting in the woods.  I found that anything higher and it took too long to find the deer in the scope.  Make sure you take a grunt tube to stop the deer before you shoot.  During the rut the bucks hardly ever stop long enough to get a good shot off.

Just bought a 2x Bushnell for my .375 Win. and shot it last weekend...it will hold 2-3" groups off of the bench...good enough with a 2x and any deer that is 100yrds. and under.  I paid $139 for the scope only.  If given the opportunity, I would easily snatch up a Leupold for $100.  The 2x is very easy to hold steady, and since your optimal range isn't going to be incredibly far, I'd say that it would do just fine with it.
How'd you like a peek at my 14-incher? (Contender, that is)
