shootercochran:  it's been better than 7 months since your first post - did you ever decide on a semi for your dad?  If so, what did you get? 

If you're still lookin', get him a used police issue 38 special.  Totally problem free and a lot easier to learn on than a da semi.

Another vote for the CZ75 or EAA Witness.  Had both, never had a FTF, FTE/FTE; can carry both in condition 1 (cocked and locked).  You can add additional caliber slide and magazine assy to a Witness (9mm, .38 Super, .40 S&W, 10mm, .45 ACP, and .22 LR available for under $300).

Nah..get a SW 9mm something...they all work...Mikey is right though...revolvers are simpler.
