Info on Walter Uhrich Custom Guns
« on: February 22, 2010, 06:52:05 AM »
I bought a gun this past weekend at auction.  It is reported to be a Walter Uhrich custom gun from Leipheim Germany, manufactured in 1950.  It is a mauser bolt action, converted to 30-06, with a very unique scope mounting system.  It also has a very well engraved game scenes all over the stock.

Does anybody know anything about this maker?  Or, can references be provided to find out more about this gun?

Thanks in advance,

B. Noz.

The Urichs were a family of engravers who worked for Winchester for many years, actually for several generations - Some of them were good; some were bad and just living off grandpa’s name.

The last time I attended a "Winchester" gun show at the Big "E" in West Springfield, Mass, the last of them (now elderly) had a table there, to sell some of his Model 21 Grand American sets.

I would think him to be the best source of information on someone most likely a relative of his - IF he's still alive & actively selling Model 21's in the Double Gun Digest (magazine).

Thanks for the info.  I went and looked at a Winchester book yesterday and the spelling of that name is "ULRICH" with an "L".

My rifle is by Walter "UHRICH" with an "H" who was in Leipheim, Germany in the 1950's.

I wonder if the spelling changed over time?

Could be - Ya never know, until you talk to the family.

FWIW, my paternal Grandfather's last name, and those of my Father & myself, differ by the two letters at the end that my Father decided to "drop", when he became old enough to decide - as I found reflected in his name lettered on his HS report cards, changing in midstream.
