Great old big old ugly dog...........
« on: February 22, 2010, 11:42:44 AM »
I called myself going squirrel hunting Sat. morning, it was such a beautiful day.  Got the 22 out and walked about 5 mi. through the woods and around the lake.  Noted some very LARGE dog tracks on the beach and thought it must be a Rott. or the like.  Stopped to take a rest and saw a very large hair dog following my scent.  Unsure of what to expect, I slipped the safety on my 22 and watched.  He got about 30 feet away and spotted me and stopped all tensed up.  I spoke to him and he became all wags and wiggles and came over and slimed me pretty good.  I had to wait until I got home to look him up to see what he was.  Wilipedia says he's a Great Pyrenees.  I'm just glad he was friendly.  He looked like he could eat a good sized coyote in about 2 bites.............. ;D :o

Coyotes is what they use them for around here. They are fearless, and protective of sheep, goats, horses, what ever is in the pasture. AND! They don't go to the barn. They live in the pasture with the live stock. A dedicated dog.

This dog obviously belonged to someone.  There are houses within a half mile of where I was, and I assume he was just taking a stroll, same as I was.......He was collared and tagged and well fed, so I sent him on his way.

Usually they don't live at the house, they quite literally live with the live stock. It's the way their bred. They will protect livestock with their life. The owners feed them in the pasture because the dog is bred to live in the elements, and does not want to leave the stock.
Here where I live, I see them daily laying around with livestock in the fields. The will do a family the same way, but are somewhat aluff and hard headed. They don't train well, and act on instinct.

A Great Pyrenees ugly?
The ones I have saw were beautiful animals. Never
have figured out how they stay so white.

Good story Mechanic. Always nice to meet up with a potential friend while out hunting.

This being the Georgia forum and the post having the title, "big old ugly dog," I thought maybe this was a report about meeting Richard (AtLaw). ;D When you got to the part about him becoming "all wags and wiggles," well, then I truly thought you must have caught up with Richard because I figure that's how Richard would be when he sees a friend. :D I said to myself, "How Cool!" ;) Well darn, even though you didn't see Richard, I'm happy you had a good time. Thanks for sharing the report.

If you take one of these fine white beasts, let him swim in the Chattahoochee a bit, then roll around in the mud one the edge, then let him walk a few miles through the booger woods, let me tell ya' he gets kinda' ugly.  Of course I didn't tell him that to his face, because I was badly undergunned with  the 22.  If his tail hadn't started waggin', I would have had to climb a tree.

I hope he made it home ok and ate about 20 pounds of Kibbles for supper.

Had a pair of them many years ago down on the little 5 ac. I used to have, Rancher bout a mile down the had some body take out about 50 ft of his fence. His cattle went waundering down the road. Got near my place and both dogs went after them and headed them into my place and kept 20 of them cornered. (only animals I had were the dogs and a bunch of rabbits at the time). Went down the road to the ranchers place and told him his fence was down and I had his cattle at my place. He got one of the hands fixing the fence and him and 2 others came to retreive the cows. He had never seen a Pyr. before and was amazed at the way the dogs kept them cornered.

I would have one here, but I fear the Texas heat would make one miserable! Lady I know had one in her yard and she had free roam chickens and even the hawks stayed away! Now he would go into the chicken yard(open the gate) and retrieve an egg for himself now and then but she figgered it was like a performance bonus.

Well now... I don't know for sure,  :-\  but I hear tell they wag their tail even while they killin' sumpin!   ;D

I do know that Angel's tail is waggin' a mile a minute all the time she's tryin to tear down the door when somebody comes a knockin'.  But she's a sweetheart!  Kathie's lap dog...  ;D  I feel a lot better knowing she's with Kathie when I'm gone.  No doubt in my mind that she would die before she let anything happen to the wife-mate...

My wife got sick and almost died 4  yrs. ago.  She went through 48 weeks of chemo.  A couple months into this she took me to a pet store and showed me a tiny little pomeranian ball of fur puppy, and confessed her deep desire for it.  They wanted $1200.00 for the dog, and I was having to come up with $600.00 a week for my part of the medical expense.  So I told her no.  The next morning, I took off work first thing, went home and sold most of my guns and bought the dog.  I believe that dog helped her deal with the crisis and come out alive and sane.  So there is no doubt it's her dog, but I would defend the little aggravation with my life......and there went the last of my manhood with me getting photographed with the little bugger for Christmas cards the next year.  Oh well, it had to go sometime...... :D

Very noble and good thing you did, we can always get more guns, sometimes the getting is the most fun. It shows good character that you sacrificed for her!

Oldshooter, it was not really noble nor a sacrifice.  We've been together since we were teens, and as you said, there are always more guns.  Truly, most of us could get by with two or three, but we don't want that to get out......

I got rid of most of what I had when the girls both were in college (at the same time), and this was just another blip in the movie of life.  When my Dad died, he had 68 guns, which I had to sell to help Mom pay off some bills.  He had fun with them, and they were a savings account for her.  I look at mine the same way.

Geeeeze Ben, I never knew that.  I went through that with Kathie around 7 years ago now.  We're both lucky men.  Even considering "their" dogs!
