i'm not a bear hunter(so far) but if i took my encore, i'd use my 15" 7-08. it would work for bear, i'm sure. i really like it for deer. i'm sure there are several others that will work too.

I've taken black bear with a Super 16" 45-70 Contender. I've also taken deer and wild boar with the same barrel. It wears a 2x Burris.
Since you have the Encore, a 12" .454 Casull barrel would be close ballistically speaking. The gun could also be used for deer as well.
What rifle do you have? Say you own a .308 or .30-06, get a 15" barrle in the same caliber. That way you have ammunition and /or reloading components for the same barrel. I wouldn't go with a barrel less than 15" with any bottle necked round. You lose too much and it becomes a flame thrower.
