got a 45-70 would the one peice talley lightweight base be a good choice?? i know these things punch id like to have the best available

 Teddy Welcome  here. The base I have found and use on all my handi's is the one H&R sells and puts on most
 Handi that don't come with sights.    Marv.

Normally when I look for a HD base I immediately look to steel bases and rings. I know someone makes a steel base for a handi but I cannot think of the manufacturer... There are a number of good sturdy rings. Burris ZEE, WARNE Maxima and LEUPOLD PRW are tops on that list. But I gotta say, factory bases, weaver bases and those like them have been fine in my heaviest recoiling handis. (500 S&W and stiff 45-70 loadings.

I think you will be fine with stock stuff combined with one of the rings I mentioned above.

no love for the talleys then hahaaha, ive always used leupold rings and bases. i just liked the idea of having the one peice. ill try n find the leupold rings n bases thanks

Warne steel base + Burris signature Zee rings or Warne steel rings = as good as it gets

bayou i took ur advise but on a different gun, i got a browning stainless a bolt for CHRISTmas last year in 300WSM. i topped it with a zeiss 3x9x40 and leupold rings and bases. i wasnt happy with the rings and bases they didnt look very solid altough thats what ive put on every other gun i own with no problem ive seen the error of my ways with the adjustable rear sight. any way i had them changed out with the warne rings and bases today i like them so far, just gotta sight it in and work up a load for this gun. its almost to pretty to shoot. im excited to see what this gun will do.

What Leupold rings did you not like and why? Just curious, was it a rifleman set?

i dont remember they werent the cheap ones, prolly $80 bucks but the 300 wsm is a short action the ones the guy put on when i bought the scope were for a long action. so there was 1/2 in of the base hanging over the bolt. it wasnt in the way but sure looked akward and am certian it wasnt the sturdiest mount for that gun.

I use the Warne steel 1 piece picatinny rail and steel Leupold QR Weaver style rings.  All this stuff is available at Midway

CW, I know your question wasn't directed to me but I have tried the Rifleman rings, from Leupold, on my .45 Colt CR and the scope slid in the rings after several shots. They've been reserved for rimfire use for now on. I went with the Burris Signature Zees on the .45.

I have a few scopes mounted on Handis in Rifleman rings, lap them properly and they work great, see scope mounting in the FAQs.  ;)

That is why I asked. I don't care for the rifleman rings.My first preference is with the PRW ring, followed by the WARNE maximum ring and lastly the BURRIS ZEE ring.

well what i got now is pretty solid i think, theres alot of manufacturers out there makin great stuff. i have have had rifleman rings on a 7 mag for 5 years that have never budged. but i think ima go with the picitanny rail on my hadi with a nikon scope.

I switched all my handis to a picatinny rail and all my scopes to Leupold QR Weaver.  I have picatinny rails on my bolt guns also.  I can change any scope at any time and never loose zero.  All my scopes have target turrets and i just write down the settings for W & E and switch and zero any time with confidence.
