Blackhawk
« on: December 16, 2009, 09:07:14 AM »
Thinking of getting a ruger blackhawk 44 mag, got a super blawkhawk hunter in mind. I was just wondering if it is worth the extra money to go with the hunter or just get the regular one. A gun shop nearby has 2 for sale at $575 and a regular ss for $400. What do you think?

If you're thinking of mounting a scope on it, then the hunter is all set up for it.  If not, I don't think it's worth it, although the hunter really LOOKS cool.  When it comes down to it, they have the exact same action and trigger pull etc.

As above, it's basically if you're gonna mount optics.  The difference between the SBH and the Hunter is the bbl obviously and some SBH's have a different grip frame.  Then there's the Bisley models of each as well.  See what feels best to YOU.

What about the price, do these seem high or average.

If you're looking at price, I'd check with a big store; Cabela's, Bass Pro Shop, etc.  Their prices can be talked down a little so keep in mind that they're a little inflated but for the most part, a lot of gun shops can't compete with a big supplier like Cabela's, at least for the high volume stuff.  You could always check prices on an auction site too but a lot of times things are a little overpriced there too.

Are those prices for new or used?    Use GunBroker to see what they're selling for (use completed auctions selection) and Davidson's price quote on their site.  Not necessarily worth having a few dollars be a make-or-break thing since if you stcik to a shop and such, in turn they'll treat you better.  Price jumping from shop to shop will never get you that.

Those are used prices, did find another one at a shop near by for $495 but he doesn't have the rings.

IMHO, if you have good eyesight, irons sights are the way to go on a handgun. I just bought the SBH Hunter in .41 mag and then bought a Leupold 2x pistol scope. I need the scope for really accurate load testing due to my aging eyesight at age 70. I will hunt with iron sights if I can. A red dot is also an option.

The SBH Hunter offers you both options in a nice package. It is still a great iron sight revolver and also has an interchangeable front sight. I like the Bisley grip.

Alright, been doing a little research and found out they make one in a 45 colt. Just getting a 460 barrel for my encore rifle so would the 45 be a better choice than the 44 mag.

Have one of the first 45 Hunters.  Have only shot it a few times but I liked it.  Might Bisley-ize it or just find and buy a Bisley one.   I will pick up a 41 Hunter. :)

Just a little FYI...these 41 and 45 Hunters are the only Super Blackhawks NOT chambered in .44 magnum.

personaly i dont like optics on sixguns but many do. If you even think theres a remote possiblility you will then id opt for the hunter as it sure makes mounting optics easy.

Yeah I did check out that link,a buddy of mine has a brother that collects rugers and has one he is going to part with, going to try to work out a deal with him.Seems any ruger in 45 colt is hard to find in my area.
