My primary H&R .22 Mag was always shot with the CCI Mini Mags until I found out it peferred Winchester Silver box and Black box just a very little bit better. It still gets shot with CCI a lot since anything at the recieving end out to 100 yards or more would never know the difference of .25" to .50", but paper does....<><....:)

I have a Sportster in .22WMR and it LOVES Winchester but DETESTS CCI!! :o  It's favorite ammo is the Winchester Supreme 32gr JHP's.  Every rimfire is different!

My .22 Mag Sportster set up for coyotes first shot and loved CCI's. Then by some odd happening I ended up with a box or box and a half of Winchester .22 Mag ammo, both Black and Silver boxes. It seems my coyote rifle does prefer them but only by .1's of inches. I still feel more than happy to hunt with the CCI's. A varmint will never know the difference at any range an ethical hunter should be shooting at them with a .22 Mag.....<><....:)

I don't have a Sportster in 22 Mag, but I have a Marlin 982S and a Henry Golden Boy in 22 Mag.
Super X 40gr JHP's hands down shoot the best of anything I have tried so far including the Maxi
Mag, Remington 40JHP's, and the lighter 30gr rounds. Every gun is different though. Find out
what works best and use it.

Another alternative is the Win. Dynapoint Magnum (white box). These have a 45 gr. 'flash' plated lead hollow point @ about 1550fps. This may not sound very impressive but it is the ballistic equivelent to the old .22 WCF (pre 1900). In my UV 22" barrel they chrono about 1500fps.
Ive campaigned this .22magUV (done up in BC wood with a Weaver 3/4" B-6) at our BPCR 'smallbore' matches for several years. This classy looking 'cheap' rifle has placed and won on occassion against MUCH more expensive traditional single shots! When I do my part it is pretty accurate.
With the above mentioned bullet it thwacks the steel varmint targets with authority (yet does them no damage as the jacketed rounds may). It scores well on the bullseye part of the match too.
I no longer hunt, but if I did I would consider this the equal of my 25-20 or possibly 32-20. The .22WCF was considered quite the medicine in the old days.

gcrank 1,
Sounds like a nice rifle!! If your thinking it the accuracy equal to your 25 or 32/20's maybe. But thinking its equal to them in performance on game is a bit of an overstatement.  Both cartridges more then double the mags bullet weight at only a little less velocity. They do similar work, but the lil mag damage more meat in the process.

I have had a number of different 22mags and all so far have far prefer the Winchester FMJ round. Much to my chagrin, I never had one that shot the HPs nearly as well. I had a Ruger M77 varmint that would constantly punch 1/2" holes with the FMJ's @100. But the HPs best was about 1.5. Now I wasn't complaining too much as a 1.5MOA 22mag is a good shooter in most anyone's book. Seeing the tiny groups with the FMJ's was bothersome when you couldnt come close with any available HP's at the time. My best shooter in the Lil mag was a Marlin 783. This thing was almost a tack driver shooting near 1" with everything sans the FMJ's these two where awe inspiring shooting 1/2" groups with ease. My H&R Ultra 22mag wasn't as good a shooter. maybe an inch with the FMJ's but near twice that with everything else. I also shot some of the then new Winchester black box 34Gr hornet bullet rounds, these showed real promise but where hard to get when they where first released. I also shot a lot of the Federal Premium 30Gr hps. These where also great shooters in most guns as well. These days I don't even have a 22mag! :o (I hope to remedy this with that new Kel Tec 30 sht 22mag pistol!!)

Points all well taken, but remember, this Dynapoint is really a soft swaged bullet with a copper plating, no jacket, so it expands well and at the 'less than magnum velocity' is more of a thwacker. Placement is everything in hunting game and these almost unknown cartridges were a surprise to me. Interesting that you found that much difference in the FMJ vs HP. Sounds like you really test them well.
BTW, I keep a box of 'real' magnums' around just in case. As I remember, they only print about 1/2" higher at 50yds so no scope adjustment is needed to reach on out.
I too like the 25-20 and 32-20, though I wish they had faster twists to stabilize heavier bullets. That would allow me to shoot heavys at sub-sonic. That slow brick will kill, but so will the Dynapoint if you put it where the critter lives. Oh yeah, and Im talking about cast bullets not jacketed.
Old Ned Roberts thought the .22WCF killed 'out of proportion to its size' and the flat shooting aspects made good kill zone hits easier than the 25s & 32s. That said, you are right too and the larger frontal area and bullet weights of those really do the job. Even a 22 Short will kill a Polar Bear, but Im not going to do it! If you start out with a big enough hole who needs expansion.
