using quickload for the 45/120
« on: January 04, 2010, 03:46:13 PM »
Do any of the 45/120 users have or use Quickload?

I was wondering if it gave useful approximations of the 45/120 performance?

Does it have the 450NE in its database?

I'm thinking of purchasing a copy, but if it doesn't give useful information for these cartridges it may not be worth my while.

I don't have a windoze PC, so i'll be trying to run it under one of the various windoze emulators for Mac.... has anyone tried this?

phil.

I've done lots of predictions with QL for the 45-120, I developed the data Tyler and Richard used for their 45-120 Nitro loads. QL3.5 lists the 450NE-3¼ at a Pmax of 44236 Piezo CIP, with a case capacity of 136gr water. Can't help ya with the Mac, don't believe in em, been working on PCs too long I guess!!  ;D

I received version 3.6 for Christmas.... lucky me, and it also lists the .450 No.2 NE 3 1/2  Eley. Hope this helps. So far I've found that the pressures listed don't always agree with pressures in the loading manuals, but velocities seem closer. ( I have been careful that I'm comparing PSI with PSI, and not CUP.) Usually it is Quickload that is on the conservative side. It sure has been a fun, and useful tool so far!

I have been using QL for many years my Version is 3.1 a bit behind time and missing some new powders and bullets. But have done quite well without them.

It is by far the most oustanding interior and exterior ballistics program. The latest version is perhaps even better.

I can't imagine how I ever managed without it, specially with all the wildcats I worked with. My needs for reloading books are much reduced. Hardly ever use them anymore. To me QL has become nearly indispensible.

One great help is to find the right powder before you even start reloading, that is the highest velocity with the lowest pressure and the best burn rate, best load density, instant trajectory tables with the load and the barrel length of best possible bullets.

However when using QL you should also use a chronograph to check on the actual velocity compared with QL's, otherwise you could run into trouble. With the use of the Handi rifle you ought to set a reasonable pressure limit. With my two Handi's I keep the max presure to 58kpsi. This makes the brass last a few extra
reloads.

Just found out from Ed Dillon of Neco that an upgrade for an earlier version is available for the QL program. I will pick up an upgrade version 3.6 at the Shot Show in Vegas.

Is that the only place to buy Quickload?

Im not one to bitch, so it must be bad if I do, but that is one bad website.  Hard on the eyes, difficult to find information, It took me 5 minutes to find the price of the software, and it was for v3.5, with many references to v3.4 along the way.  No mention of v3.6 that I could find.

It's the only source I know of, I've not seen version 3.6 either, just upgraded to 3.5 which is dated April 2009, would've went to 3.6 if it was on their website! ::)
