Naval 24 Pounder Pt. 2
« on: January 09, 2010, 10:26:09 AM »
Barrels are usually turned between centers but I did not want a center cone remaining on the ball end when I was finished the barrel. Fortunately I have a 3 jaw independent Buck chuck so I was able to indicate the barrel when re-chucking. I made a brass split bushing so I could chuck over the ball to finish the back diameter of the barrel where the steadyrest rode on while I finished the casabel and ball. I experienced a little chatter when machining the ball so I finished it using small fine files and a radius gage. I then finished the barrel with 2500 grit Norton Paper & oil then brass polish.
