Remington Single Shot
« on: December 12, 2009, 08:35:58 AM »
I was at a Walmart up in the sticks the other day (believe it or not, the folks who work there actually know something about guns!).  They had some Russian-made single shots that were pretty slick looking - except for a wierd twisting facet pattern on the barrels.  They seemed like really solid single shot rifles.  They were selling for about $280.  The guy behind the counter said that they were the last of the Remington imported single shots and that Remington was going to start manufacturing an equivalent here in the U.S.  The forend has a lever-latch mechanism instead of a screw, and they break open by a trigger-like extension in front of the trigger guard.  Anybody else seen or know about these and Remington's plans?  Are these going to start competing with the Handis?  The folks in the store said that some of the locals reported that they were very accurate.

They have been around for a while, and are Russian made.

Perhaps the guy didn't know quite as much as he led you to believe. Remington bought out NEF via the buy out of Marlin and so I guess you could say technically they are now making a single shot in the US but it's nothing new really they just moved manufacture of the old NEF product line to their facilities and renamed them H&R the older name of them.

I don't see Remington coming out with any new line of single shot rifles as I take it the guy had in mind.

Yeah, my thought was that maybe Remington-Marlin-Handi was going to start making a product that might eventually replace the Handi as we know it.  Worried me a little bit.

Not to worry, the Spartan centerfire rifles are no longer imported, Remington dumped them coincidently about the time they bought Marlin/H&R.

I just saw one myself and was impressed with the handling/sighting characteristics. It has the look of a european stalking rifle and the fit/finish and styling was a whole lot better than the Baikal imports of only a few years ago. For the $300ish price tag I thought it a decent possibility for someone wanting that style.
The sights were visible without crowding the comb, wrist felt good in the hand, and it seemed lively enough to be a good game rifle. The rear integral dovetailed receiver looked similar to a Weaver but it appeared the rear open sight would need to be removed from its dovetail in ramp to be replaced with a european type front mount. I dont know if it comes with such (it should).
The forestock was a little 'racey' for me, but there is enough wood there to reshape easily. It had a thin oil looking finish over a walnut? stain that would strip easily too and with your choice of stain and a bit more hand rubbing of an quality oil finish would look good.
I dont know what calibers they are (were) available in, but this one was .308. If they shoot well I think it would be quite a value for this price.
BTW: Ive read somewhere that the Baikal factory is an up to date facility and they contract out to the quality & features desired.

If anyone is interested in one of these rifles go to Buds Gun Shop online and search for Remington International, they have them in several popular calibers.
For some reason ? the 30-06 and 308 are lower priced than the other calibers.
They have the 30-06 and 308 for $ 195.00 including shipping, a great price I think, I would buy one for myself but I am in a down sizing mode right now.   Jed

the last two gun shows here in Oklahoma there were a lot of them and at a close out price from 225.oo up to 239.00 all new with boxes and papers. There was one dealer trying to get 400.00 for the ones he had but no takers I would think you could pick one up for under 200.00.
