Another alternative is the Simmons pro diamond shotgun scope.  Works well for me.

I love the Nikon Prohunter 2-7x32 on my Sidekick and the Bushnell Banner 1-4x32 works nicely on my Pardner 20 ga. for slugs too. Both very reasonably priced and good clarity of glass I think.

Tim

I wasn't trying to sound cheap from the on-set of this post, but I have so many $800 scopes on $1000 dollar rifles that collect dust because of how much they cost me. I want something that I don't mind dragging through a cut over and then it getting stomped on in the bottom of the boat on the way home. If you get my drift I need to be able to replace it fairly easily.

No point in paying over $200.00 for a scope.

Daman, I don't believe $800 scopes are necessary at all, but I don't like cheap scopes either for the most part, but for $100-$300, the average hunter can get a scope that will perform just as well for them as the expensive optics will.

Optics have changed a LOT in the last 20yrs, there's an article titled Better Scopes, Lower Prices in the Nov 2009 North American Hunter by Ron Spomer on optics, I've been hoping it would be available on the website, but not yet, but it's a good read.

Here are a couple of his statements... "Today's $150-$200 scopes might be better than the $400-$500 scopes of 20yrs ago." and "Inexpensive scopes are never as sharp and clear as top models, but might not need to be. Reality check- a scope is a glorified front sight, so as long as you can see the crosshair clearly against your target, it'll work. You don't need to see every whisker on a bull or buck's muzzle to make an accurate shot."

I entirely agree.  ;)

How true Tim. I discovered a Pentax 40mm back in my collection that had never been out of the box. (traded for it and a Leupold I believe) Anyway it will find a resting spot on the 7mm-08 for now. My wife has a Nikon Prostaff in her collection, but wants a Trijicon on that gun so.... I may end up with a "free" Prostaff if you don't consider the purchase of the Trijicon into the equation.

The circles we turn and the money we spend to keep our hobbies and a wonderful American tradition going is mind blowing, but I love every minute and would spend a whole lot more to preserve the heritage!!!!!

I have owned 2 Barska scopes and both of them were a real disappointment.
Niether one would hold zero very well at all and the glass sucked big time.
Lesson learned. Go with a good brand. It might cost a few bucks more,
but it is way worth in in the long run.

i recently got a cheap shotgun scope,2.5x20 Simmons 8 pt, and really like the way you can mount this scope in front of the hammer. It's low over the bore, and really easy to get on target due to low magnification and long eye relief...this is a real good setup on a 100 yd gun like 357,44mag,and 45LC

I have an old Simmons 2.5x20 on my 44 mag Handi. I got it on ebay for 6 bucks. It works good. ;D
You don't need big scopes for the woods.

Another alternative is the Simmons pro diamond shotgun scope.  Works well for me.

These are great scopes and I should've bought every one I could lay my hands on when wally world put them on clearance a couple years ago. where can they be found now?

For that kinda money I'd rather have a Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5X32.

Within the last year I paid $35 and $40 for older Weaver K-2.5 and K-3 scopes. I had some 1" rings (inexpensive Weaver style) in the bin so no cost there. These are great old scopes that are easy to fit and just plain work. I dont even look at the new 'off-brand' stuff on the tables anymore since re-discovering the Weavers. The K-4 & 6s and later 'Marksman' models often have nice duplex reticules and are readily available.

But with the simmons pro diamond you can use low rings on a handi can't do that with the bushnells.
SM BOB thanks for the info

Good point!  The old Weavers have fine crosshairs.  I need a Duplex reticle.
